How much does dental work cost (w/o insurance)?

I've been going to the same dentist forever and have been using my parent's insurance. I just switched and now have my own insurance - CIGNA. My dentist is not in my network and I would have to pay 50% of all costs every time I go in for a visit. Does anyone know what it costs for dental work on average? Including cleanings, fillings (i get a lot of cavities), occasional xrays?

Can you see a dentist if you don't have dental insurance or one of the discount plans?

A friend of mine doesn't have dental coverage at the moment and he needs to see a dentist right away. He has an infection/abcess and he's in a lot of pain. Is there something like an ER for dental emergencies? --Nashville, TN
--------------------
You can see them but you need to pay. One choice is that dental schools have minimal cost care (performed by supervised students) that could help you. Look in local phone book for them.

My dental insurance doesn't cover the costs of the bridge?

even though after the plan I have, they should cover 60 % of the costs, but so far they refused twice. Can I take them to the court and sue them? Or what else shall I do?
--------------------
There may be a missing tooth clause in your contract. If you were missing the tooth before you went on the insurance, it's a pre-exisitng condition that they may not cover. Check to see WHY they are denying it as your EOB (Explanation of Benefits) should list a reason why they aren't paying. Taking them to court would be a waste of your time and money.

Will having a dental plan ontop of my insurance help financially with the bill?

I need quite a bit of work on my teeth and a little bit of what may be considered cosmetic. Will having a dental plan on top of my insurance actually make a difference and help financially with the bill? (Considering of course that the dentist actually accepts both my insurance and plan)
--------------------
Normally your health insurance won't cover any dental unless it is specifically related to something other than your teeth. The dental coverage would generally not cover elective cosmetic procedures either, but your dentist might be able to get them to pay it. I'd ask the dentist's opinion here, but be advised that a lot of times the provider is paid less than normal by an insurance company, so they do have a financial incentive in some cases to mislead you on this a little.

Should I get dental insurance?

I have had bad experience with different dental insurance companies, it either never covered and when it did I usually ended up paying for most of it... it was very pricy. So my friends are telling me I am better of without dental insurance and paying out of pocket or setting up payment plans at the docs office... anybody know anything about dental ins? What do you think?

Don't expect something for nothing. You can find it, but expect to pay more for it a month. Also expect a year or so waiting period on any major work. (Root canals, crowns, dentures.....)

How soon does dental and health insurance apply in the military?

does it depend on branch? surely they all have universal health/dental care?
--------------------
It will depend on what you are, Active Duty, dependent or Reservist/National Guard. If you are AD then as soon as you leave for Basic/Boot/BCT/Recruit Training and your information is entered into DEERS you are covered medical and dental on base facilities. For AD military there is no charge for medical or dental. If you are a dependent, then as soon as your information is entered into DEERS by your spouse/parent then you are enrolled into Tricare Standard. With Standard there is a yearly deductible and a co-pay for each visit with the doctor/clinic/hospital that is approved by Tricare. After you get your military ID card then you can enroll into Tricare Prime or Prime Remote. With Prime if you register before the 20th of the month then it starts the next month (ie enroll March 19th, starts April 1st). If you register after the 21st then it doesn't start until the following month (ie March 24th, doesn't start until May 1st). With Prime you are assigned a PCM (primary care manager) at the military clinic or hospital closest to you. Now with Dental that is separate, the company you go through is United Concordia and it is $13 a month for single or $23 a month for a family. You are covered for 2 cleanings & 1 xray per year. Then all other work is co-pay up to $1200 for each person per year. You have to pay the first month out of your account and then after that it is deducted from your pay. With National Guard and Reservists along with their family members it is totally separate unless you are Full time then you are covered under the regular Tricare and United Concordia.

anyone know of affordable dental insurance for western Ky? ?

i need to have dental work done, but no insurance.
--------------------
You have five options with dental. 1. Go without insurance. If you have good teeth and just want the basics you probably don't need any plan. A yearly cleaning and exam and even an occasional filling will cost you less without insurance. 2. Visit a local dental school. You can get many procedures done for a reduced price if you're willing to let them practice on you. You can find one here: http://www.yourhealthplanadvisor.com/Den… 3. Insurance - Depending upon the policy: cost $30-$60 per month. You pay a $50 deductible first, they have an annual maximum that they'll pay per year of $750 - $1500, they have a waiting period up to 18 months for major work and then you're paying 50% of the charges. Example - average cost for a root canal in my area is $919. With insurance you pay $460 after paying 18 months of premium (around $800 or $900). Advantage - you can use any dentist with most plans. 4. Discount plans - Cost - $5-$12 per month. No deductible, no annual maximum and no waiting periods. Also, hardly any dentists will accept the plan and when they do you MIGHT get a 10% discount, which is about the same discount you can get by paying cash. Example - average cost for a root canal in my area is $919. With discount plans you pay around $827. Be very wary of these plans because most are scams. The people that sell these plans have little or no knowledge about health & dental insurance and do not need a license to sell them. The plans are not regulated by the state so you have no recourse when you have problems. Some states are starting to ban these plans from being sold. Here is an informative link http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/wes… concerning these plans. 5. Fee for Service discount plans - Cost $7-$15 per month. No deductible, no annual maximum and no waiting periods. Many dentist will accept the plan (check providers first before signing up with any plan). When you use the plan there is a set fee that the dentist will charge you. Example - average cost for a root canal in my area is $919. With fee for service plans you pay as little as $404. I'm an insurance agent and my personal plan is the fee for service plan. I got mine here http://www.dpbrokers.com/default.aspx?lo… specifically the Aetna Dental Access plan but which one you get depends upon your area and comparing the fee schedule to find the best for what you need covered.
