Help! Dont know what to do about a high dental bill?

Oh my goodness. Ok, wasnt using my head when I went to see this dentist about a broken filling I had. Well, I went outside my network of dentists on my insurance plan. I go into his office and he only gives me one option for a filling and proceeds to start prepping my tooth for this filling. Turns out, it was the most expensive filling he offered. On top of that I havent received a bill yet and the nurse just told me that the approximate amount was going to be $1,087. She says I have to pay everything up front when I come in to have the filling placed in my mouth. Right now I have a temporary and I asked if I could go with another kind of filling, she tells me it's too late. They have already taken the impression of my tooth and I have to pay for the whole thing. I feel like I was taken advantage of. What do I do?
--------------------
WOW!! Over a thousand for a filling. Call another dentist for another opinion. That sounds like a really outrageous amount of money for that procedure. Best of luck to you. If you have a temporary filling in your mouth, well, it is kinda like having braces and going to another dentist to have them removed. They usually will not remove the braces because it is a sign that you did not pay the dentist that put the braces on the the first place.

I need help choosing a health insurance?

I live in Southern California (If that matters). I'm young and healthy but I have been without health insurance for the last year. I was wondering who is your health insurance provider and if you would recommend it. I don't have much money since I just graduated from SDSU and without a teaching job:( But I am willing to pay the little money I have for health insurance. Thanks! I will need one that will cover dental and vision the big ones for me since I need to take my wisdom teeth out (giving me big headaches) and I wear glasses which need to be replaced soon. Thanks in advance.
--------------------
Dental and vision are seperate policies, from health insurance. So you're talking about THREE insurance policies - one dental, one vision, and one health. I've never seen any private dental or vision policies that pay out more than they cost, so my recommendation is pay out of pocket. There will be serious coverage limitations and wait times, for that wisdom teeth removal bit. If you're 25 and perfectly healthy, a good low/no deductible plan should cost you around $250 a month. A local agent is probably who you need to talk to about this, but I'm sure they'll tell you the same thing.

what exactly would you change so that a root canal does not cost close to $1000 in the USA?

or a dental implant does not cost upwards of $4,000, or that comprehensive health insurance for a healthy family of 4 does not cost the employer and employee a combined $15,000 a year in annual premiums?. Please, I am talking commons sense practical changes that make sense and would put strong downward pressure on prices of healthcare in the USA.

Maybe the television in the ceiling and full cable channel access isn't all that necessary.

My crown is falling out...what can I do?

I have two crowns (after root canals )in the front of my mouth on the top. one of my front teeth and then the one beside it. the front one started to wiggle and eventually fell out. now the one beside it is doing the same thing!!!! I don't have dental insurance so I have to go when I can afford it, and being a woman...this is quite embarrassing. Why would this be happening? Also..when the dentist put the first one back in...it hurt and he said that I shouldn't feel it at all. Any suggestions?
--------------------
This exact same thing happened to me! My dentist would not re cement for free, I needed a post inserted. Ugh, so I started using this temporary dental cement made especially for crowns, bought it at Walgreens for about $5 It was not very good, my tooth would be loose by the end of the day, I couldn't eat or say anything starting with a F. So, I got ghetto and put a tiny dab of superglue, it worked for like 6 months until I could save the money to get a post put in my mouth. The dentist wasn't too happy but he said he's seen worse. I was not about to walk around with missing front teeth. I wonder why it hurt when he put the crown back in, you should have root canals where your crowns are. I hope it isn't something else like an abcess.

Health Insurance???

I am needing to find a health insurance plan for my family. It will be for my husband & I and our 2 girls. I am looking for something that will cover it all....health, dental, vision....whatever. If anyone can kind of point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it. Or if you have any tips for me. I really don't even know where to begin.... Oh and my husband is self employed....he's an independent contractor (if that helps at all)
--------------------
There is no one best company and with health insurance you get what you pay for. Visit a local agent that works with all the major companies in your area. The agent can find the best plan for your situation and budget and can explain what you get and, more importantly, what you won't get with any plan. There is no extra charge using an agent. Most individual policies don't include dental and vision. Some will have limited dental and vision as an optional benefit at an additional cost but when you do the math you are generally better off without the coverage. The agent can show you the plans with this option. Do not try to do this over the internet. It'll take you several days to intelligently compare all the plans available. Also, if you have any pre-existing conditions that might add a rider to the policy, cause you to be declined, or if you are out of the height and weight guidelines you won't know until you've applied and gone through the underwriting process.

Hole in my back tooth. Is Mexico a good place to go to get this filled?

A co worker informed me that when she had her two children, two of her teeth feel out (just crumbled) since the calcium was sucked out of her bones. She said she went to Mexico to get them filled. Is this is a good idea and how much would it cost if I did go? I don't have dental insurance and I don't want my tooth pulled! thanks
--------------------
I live in San Diego which is like 20 minutes from Mexico and alot of my friends go to Mexico for dental work. I guess you can get the work done for like 1/3 of the cost. Many of the dentists have gone to school in the US and speak english etc. but work in Mexico. If I didn't have dental insurance I would definitely consider it.

Should I keep my Medical Insurance? It seems too expensive to keep and I'm healthy?

I pay almost $200 a month for medical insurance through my employer. It covers medical, vision and dental. But I'm a healthy 24 year old female. The only thing I use it for is birth control, which I'm paying too much for through the insurance. If I went to planned parenthood, I could get it for a tenth of what I'm paying now. I don't plan on getting pregnant in the next 5 years (I know accidents happen). But what if I were to save that $200 a month and put it in a savings account and save it for any medical expenses. What do you think? Even if I have a horrible accident, I could tap into that medical expense savings account. If I'm going to be paying $200 a month for the rest of my life, why couln't it just go towards medical bills, instead of medical insurance?

Health Insurance?

I'm trying to get a good health insurance (since the one I have right now is not the greatest) that will cover my dental and Other medical things. Do you guys know of any good ones that: 1.) Have good coverage 2.) Covers dental (definetly) 3.) and that won't cause me to sell my organs in the black market to pay for it every month? I'm doing my own "research" but I want to know if you guys know of any.

Wisdom tooth coming in at age 34. It's crooked and bleeding. What's wrong?

My husband, who is 34, is getting a wisdom tooth in his mouth. It is crooked and going into his cheek and pushing his other teeth out of alignment. It keeps bleeding more and more. Why would it keep bleeding more and could anything be seriously wrong? What should we do. We don't have dental insurance.
--------------------
Wisdom teeth are all the way in the back of our mouths, consequently they are difficult to reach and keep clean. Debris tend to accumulate back there and causes pain and inflammation, especially if the wisdom tooth is crooked. That happens to a lot of people and isn't terribly unusual. Best treatment? Get them pulled. If cost is a concern, look for a local teaching hospital that has an oral surgery department. They usually have oral surgery residents undergoing training who can do such extractions for somewhat lower fees than an oral surgeon in private practice. Hope this helps.

An ethical question - I couldn't reach my dentist; should I switch?

I like to think of my dentist as a personal friend. He was my brother's college roommate and I have been taking my boys to him for 15 or so years. He's done a great job, including root canals and crowns for me. In the last few years, I haven't had dental insurance and he's given me a break on his fees a couple of times (but I paid him in cash, so it's Uncle Sam that was shorted). Yesterday at football practice, my son had two of his teeth knocked out. The only emergency number for my dentist was his home machine and no one answered. I called another dentist (who my dentist had taking his patients last spring when he was on vacation and the same son chipped his two front teeth nearly off playing basketball.) The second dentist had is cell number as an emergency number and he dropped his kids off at a neighbors to come back to his office to re-insert my son's teeth. Should I switch to dentist #2? I feel like I owe him my regular business.
--------------------
Your son's teeth were knocked out completely? Instead of frantically calling your dentist, and then the other one, why didn't you just take your son to the ER? There are dentists on call at every hospital... It's up to you if you want to switch to Dentist #2, but just like the first answerer said, Dentist #1 may be on call for him during his vacation...

Is there free dental care?

Im 17 and my mom is unemployed (no surprise with this economy, right?). Anyway, I have a few cavities and my teeth really hurt. Only problem is I don't have the luxury of being able to go to the dentist because we don't have health insurance. So is there free dental care?
--------------------
It depends on where you live. Look in the phone book for your state or county Department of Public Health.

Aspen-Dental , Scam?

I'm in dire need of dental work but have no insurance and limited funds. searching the internet for help I come across aspen dental offering financial assistance. after reading all information , I qualify. they approve me for two-thousand dollars of dental work. I'm excited , I'm happy and I feel as though one of my prayers has been answered but like the old saying says "to good to be true". At the office , I'm supposed to get a free cleaning with free x-rays but I got no cleaning with a partial x-ray of one side then they claimed there was no approval other than one-hundred dollars , they humiliated and embarrassed me in front of clients and staff . They falsely advertised but little do they know , I printed off their offer along with the two-thousand dollar approval. I'm seriously considering a law suit. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
--------------------
Take them to small claims court for the amount of your premium and anything you had to pay the dentist. Also, check with the consumer fraud division of your local police department for advice on where to turn them in. While you're waiting for your court date to come up write Aspen a letter to their legal department and tell them exactly what you are doing. They may just get religion and take care of you. Good luck

How many dentist's / oral surgeon's are super generous?

I need two teeth be extracted, not wisdom teeth (got lucky, don't have to have them pulled... yet) but, have no dental insurance, and am just a poor college student. How many of these guys would reduce the price as much as they could?
--------------------
You never know......... Just be nice and talk about your college life and you might get a nice discount. If you are in college, maybe your college has a dental school where you can get a tooth removed pretty cheap.

Other than Higher Health Insurance Rates & Free Abortions what else do We The People get, for a Trillion Bucks?

How about Dental Care for the elderly on Social Security is that in the Obama Amendment. What about limits on Lawyers in Medical Suits is that covered in the Obama Amendment
--------------------
We are looking at higher premiums, possibly losing the health insurance we already have and like, and possibly losing our doctors. Taxes go up, but no benefits will happen for years (if then) And we have a dictatorship that can pass legislation without voting on it by "deeming" it passed.

Cost to have a molar pulled?

Does anyone know how much it would cost with Aetna Dental insurance to have a far back molar pulled. It broke awhile back, and slowly keeps losing more tooth but now it is starting to cause me pain. I am not sure what type of procedure this would be since it is broke could anyone tell me anything. Aetna Insurance located in Houston Texas
--------------------
The best way is to call a Dental place in your area that will use your insurance. They will be able to assist you more on what needs to be done and cost wise. Call around and find a dentist near you or close to where you will be and see if they accept your Dental insurance carrier. Good Luck.

does somebody know if the hospitals provide dental services?

I have not medical insurance and i want to know if this services are provided in the hospitals and if them are cheaper than in a regular dentistry
--------------------
I can only speak for my area by relating to you what our patients tell us. Most emergency rooms do not have a dentist on staff. The physician at the emergency room can not pull tooth or prescribe treatment. They can, however, write a prescription for antibiotics which are very important when it comes to managing toothache pain caused by infection. They can also write a prescription for pain medicine to help ease your pain until you can see a dentist. The ER visit is much more expensive than a visit to a general dentist and not the best choice if there are other options available. However, if you wake up Saturday morning in horrible pain, it may be a good temporary solution. Best wishes!

my son needs dental work done and cant afford it what should i do?

he has really bad teeth and needs a good dentist in kansas city area he has no insurance and cant afford alot.
--------------------
Call your state's/county's department of health and human services. (It'll go by a different name in your area, but you can search online.) They will help you find out if you qualify for medical assistance. Usually public aid has dental benefits tied to it.

The last time I had a sewer line cleaned, the guy was in and out of my driveway in less than 15 minutes. His bill was $169.00. That's more than double my hourly rate. Why did that cost so much?

I have a bridge of 4 teeth. After a year or so a 2 millimeter gap opened between my tooth and the bridge?

I am middle aged, so the reason may have something to do with aging. It makes my smile kinda spooky, beside sometimes my skin get clipped in the gap, which hurts and pretty embarrassing, too. A dentist told me that enamel would help, with the cost of $800 or more. What are the solutions to make the gap disappear? Are there any less expensive ways to do it? (I have no dental insurance)
--------------------
I am kind of confused too. Is there a smooth transition from the crown to the tooth, and there is just divets or scooping effect under the tooth? If so, the dentist can use Glass Ionomer (best material) or Resin (looks the best). Those usually run the same as a 3 surface filling. Is it a gap at the margin of the crown and the tooth? If so, 2mm is really large, I would not attempt to repair that at all, but if your dentist thinks it is o.k. to do a repair there are a few options they could use. Amalgam, gold foil, or glass ionomer are all options you can use and they will be the same as a 2 surface filling. Sorry I don't know how much your dentist charges for those, so I don't want to give you a number that might be higher or lower.

Should I just accept the inevitable, and then ask for more?

Okay, it's obvious that the whiners are going to get some form of "universal health care" passed. So, should I just accept the inevitable and then using the logic that it is the governments job to take care of me and not mine, demand that the government buy auto, tractor trailer, freight, home, renters, work-mans comp, vision, dental and life insurance for me too?
--------------------
No, you can fight it! Universal health care is a sham. If people want it so badly, they can move to the UK!
