Tooth trauma question?

This weekend, our very large dog (80+ pound German Shepherd mix) got really excited chasing our daughter, and jumped up on her back, knocking her down face first onto the kitchen floor. She definitely hit her mouth, and we are concerned that one of her teeth may have been damaged - has anyone else had experience with damaged teeth in an infant/toddler? It bled initially, and we couldn't tell whether the blood was coming from around the tooth or from her lip (her lip was definitely bleeding, but couldn't tell if the tooth was, too). It looks fine now, and she doesn't seem to be experiencing any discomfort - for anyone who has had experiences, was the child in pain afterward? What should I be looking for? We don't have dental insurance on her yet (honestly didn't think we'd need it until she was a bit older!), so I'm just asking for any input from people who have had similar problems, and anyone who cares to give some advice. Thanks! Also, please note: This question is not intended to start a debate as to what we should do to the dog - I am just looking for information on teeth!
--------------------
Hi! My nephew Did this over the summer although when he fell it was on the back concrete patio and it actually chipped his tooth in half. We we concerned about the same thing tooth trauma. When his mother took him to the dentist all they said to look for was for the tooth to start turning black or an akward color ar swelling around the tooth and to bring him back because we was a bit youngto hold down. Needless to say the tooth didn't turn black and they took him for a follow up not to long ago and the tooth is fine. Since there is no initial damage to the tooth itself I would say that she is fine. BUt if it makes you feel better you can always take her to the dentist.... Good luck i hope i help you a little

I'm having pain in just 1 tooth....?

Ok so, this morning while taking a shower, one of my teeth on the bottom just started hurting really bad. Then right before I got out I spit some blood out of my mouth, I went and looked in the bathroom mirror and I couldn't see where the blood was coming from but it wasn't the tooth, but I spit blood about 3 more times. My tooth is really hurting right now. I haven't been to the Dentist in years, because we can't afford it (and I don't have dental insurance) and I'm 19. What could it be? A cavity? Thanks, Cory
--------------------
hey not fun, I agree with the other poster, you really need a dentist. It could be evidence of gum disease, an abcess in the tooth/gums, sign of cavity and it also could be evidence of something more sinister. You should def. get it checked out, You probably need a check up and possibly most likely need a course of antibiotics. Don't let it get any worse, please go and get it looked at ASAP.

gap between teeth, looks prominent after scaling.also overbite problem.?

My cousin has her tartars removed for the first time in her life, it is clean now. but the front 2 teeth on the lower jaw quite not straight and aligned parallel to each other , causing a big gap in between. the gap became so prominent after scaling, she feels very shy and depressed.her denist said that he would just lace another tooth in between!! I guess he was talking about artifical removable tooth. she is just in her mid twenties, is it really a good idea? what kinna orthodontic treatment she needs to fill the gap for years or to implant a tooth.she is on budget now and can't afford any expensive procedure.please suggest some good methods for her with cost.she is in India, no dental insurance. Secondly what kinna procedures are required to fix gaps between all the frontal teeth and also reducing overbite to make both the jaws proportionate.
--------------------
The overbite can only be corrected with braces. However, the main problem is the huge gap, which had been there all along. You just couldn't see it because it was covered by the tartar. Unfortunately, she has a lot of bone loss already, which is irreversible. It is also harmful to go for the braces with existing gum disease. So, the best thing will be to treat the gum condition first and then decide the course of action.

My teeth are horrible....?

Ok I am 16 and I basically have horrible teeth. I haven't been to the dentist in over a year because I guess its not on the top of my family's priority list. Yeah I also really really need braces but I have only been to the orthodontist once and that was 3 years ago. I also have a horrible time with brushing my teeth too, I am lucky if I brush them once a day but I have gone without brushing them for 2+ days before. This is beacuse brushing my teeth makes me cough and gag really bad... Ugh I feel horrible and I know that I what I am doing is terrible. Any suggestions how I can talk my parents into taking me to the dentist (we have dental insurance) or how I can talk them into how important braces are or with brushing my teeth in general?? I have already talked to my parents and I have even printed them off articles but they are just like yeah ok eventaually we will get to it...
--------------------
owch they look painful, i had a tooth sticking up in the middle of my mouth and i thought that was bad before they removed it. My advice would be to talk to them again, just tell them how much it means to you, and mention that once you have been to the dentist and orthodontist and they have signed the papers they don't have to come with you any more (once you get the appointment for the braces and they have signed everything there's nothing that they need to do) Tell them that it ill take about a hour of their time and then you will be happy. (i didn't go to the orthodontist for about 6 years as first time i went they told me i couldn't be treated as i had too many baby teeth left) just keep on at them until they give in and tell them that it is impossible to brush them as they are (i know how you feel cause i found it hard to brush before i got my braces) With the coughing and gagging is it because you have to push the tooth brush in too far (if so i can't help that only a dentist can) or is it because the toothpaste if horrible and gets down your throat (if that's the case just ask your parents if you can try a different brand, even if it is just for you to use)

Big decision to make. Any advice?

I am almost 18. I have been living in Germany with my family since last August. As soon as I turn 18 I can either move home to America (without my family) in March, or stay here with my family until next December. If I move back I will be flying home alone, living with my older sister, working, and attending a local community college If I stay here I have 9 extra months to be a kid with very little real responsibility. I'll be on my parent's health and dental insurance. I can save up more money. I can travel more. I could take some basic college courses here on post (military post). I could better prepare for the transition into adulthood. And, I'd be flying home with my family. Really, it makes so much sense to stay in Germany for 15 months. I'd be very happy doing so. The thing making this decision so hard is my desire to be where my other loved ones are. Sister, nephew, boyfriend, friends, etc. Also, I already told people I would be home in March. It's been my plan for a long time. I don't feel like bumming anyone out by telling them I'm not coming back for much longer than expected. And I really don't know how much longer I can be away from them. I'm not asking anyone to decide this for me. Just wanting some words of wisdom. Some words of advice. Just anything that might aid me in choosing the right path.
--------------------
Hello there!(: what I would do is stay in germany because even thought you miss your loved ones and they miss you too they will understand this is what's best for you. Hope it helped!

Here are my criteria: What branch is for me? ..and other misc. questions about the military?

I am a freshman in college but I want to get into the military for 2 years and be done. ( I might do 4 if I really like it) These are my reason: To serve my country GI Bill Able to get college credits and take classes as you serve Health, Dental Insurance for life Military Discount Job Preference after Duty TRAVEL!!! I do NOT want to kill anyone, or be responsible for a death, as it is super against my religion. Oh and I'm not trying to die either. So, I plan on getting a good score on the ASVAB, and working in the IT field. I don't want to be in infantry. Here are my questions: 1- Which branch will let me travel and see new cultures the most? 2- If I just serve for only 2 years, will I get the above benefits? 3- How long do you have to be in the military before considered a veteran? 4- Is it true that I may be called up for duty even when I have completed my 2 years? If so, when will I truly be done? 5- Which branch is least discriminatory towards Muslims? 6- What is life like for Muslims like me in the Armed Forces, and will I be able to perform my religious duties (pray 5X/day, etc)? 7- Is it true that you get 1 free cosmetic surgery ( such as lasik, etc.) ? I don't really care about promotions, rank, or getting into a military career. Feel free to correct any assumptions that I have made above.I tried to do as much research as I could before I got bored. I'm leaning towards Airforce or Navy, but everything is still in the air. If you could tell me your experiences with one of them, I would appreciate it. Thanks a lot for any input you can give me.
--------------------
I honestly think you may not like any service based on what you have said, but let's take the questions on one at a time. 1. The Navy tends to travel the most, but shore leave is short. The Army has the most bases worldwide offering a longer time to experience other cultures. 2. You enlist for 8 years, period. All enlistments are for 8 years, they can be split between active duty, reserves, and IRR (individual ready reserve, means you are still under contract and can be called back in, but you don't do drill like in the reserve). Most branches are only doing a minimum active duty of 3 years for first time enlistments, but different MOSs (army talk for jobs) have certain minimum enlistment times based on training time and other factors. As for the benefits, you will get them while you are active duty, a more restricted form if reservist and none while IRR. 3. Normally, you need to finish your first enlistment contract to be a vet, but that can change if you are discharged for medical or other reasons early. It sounds like what you want to know about is VA benefits. Those are based on your type of discharge first off. Some benefits are available to most people (VA home loan program for one), but the majority of them are limited to those with a disability rating of 20% or higher and military retirees. 4. As I said above, you enlist for 8 years and can be called up at any point during them. 5 & 6. All branches are open to all religions; I can only speak for my experiences in the Army though. There will always be bigots, no matter where you go. Too many people have no understanding of beliefs outside their own and don't want to learn. I know several Muslims that have served, and as long as you can understand that your mission and job comes first, most units are willing to work with you on prayer times. Will you miss prayer times, yes, and often, but I have been told the Koran allows this by other Muslims before. Otherwise, you are free to practice your beliefs as you choose, and the chaplains can help you make any arrangements. 7. No, you don't automaticaly get free cosmetic surgery. Some military hospitals offer some types. I know the hospital where I am at (Fort Bliss, TX) is now offering screenings for Lasik surgery for active duty only. Just a bit more here, so bear with me please. Your chances of being killed in the military sit around .02%, which is far less than the chances of being killed in a car wreck or plane crash. Most soldiers don't have to kill, you will be trained to but that doesn't mean you will. In fact, the majority of soldiers never fire their weapons outside of target practice. Of course you will need to avoid jobs like infantry and Cav to do that, they have a greater chance of facing combat than most. I was able to take a lot of college while I was active, finished 4 degrees actually. It will often depend on you though, how hard you are willing to work, how much free time you are willing to give up (got mine by taking classes at night, on weekends, and online but still had plenty of free time to have fun). The simple fact is you will have to make some sacrifices if you want to reap the benefits the military offers. You need to decide if those sacrifices are worth it to you as an individual, but for me, I wouldn't trade my time in the Army for anything.

Bridge vs Implant?

One of my tooth got cracked! Unfortunately, it has to go. My dentist suggested me to have a bridge; but my husband's dentist recommended an implant to my husband. (He also had a problem with his teeth.) Even though I could pay for an implant, it is a huge bill so I don't want to pay. (of course) But I can use an implant screw forever, right? On the contrary, I don't know how long a bridge lasts. And I have to sacrifice 2 of my tooth to make a bridge. (1 has a filling, another is a healthy teeth) My dental insurance covers some for a bridge, but it is still expensive... I would like to hear your experience for both a bridge and an implant. Problem(s), No Problem(s), some Problem(s)...Please tell me your story! Thank you for your help.
--------------------
Bridges can last up to 10-15 years if done well, and placed on good, strong teeth. They are less expensive and don't involve surgery. Implants involve drilling into the bone and putting in a little screw. This site should then be left to heal for 3 months before making a prosthetic tooth to go into that implant. There isn't as much long-term work to prove the longevity of implants as they are a new thing compared to bridges. The only way to decide is to talk over both options with your dentist and make sure you understand the pros and cons before you decide for sure

Is My Husband Crazy or What?

My husband got fired from his job 'cause he fall drug test. Anyhow, we live on one income which is not much 75K yr for that last 10mo. He doesn't even want find a job he says he is not going to take a job unless is something he wants. However, he has a child from previous marriage who lives in another State and I talk to his ex telling her that I can't offer to pay the child support anymore all I can do is to keep the child on my health and dental insurance and till her dad gets a job we won't be paying child support so I stopped the automatic payment starting the first of this mo. I also told her that we can't have his daughter this summer like we mostly do 'cause I can't offer to hire a full time baby sitter 'cause my husband said won't watch her while I'm at work. Now my husband is so mad saying that we could offer to do all that and I'm doing this 'cause she is not my child which is not true. What should I do I don't want look like the bad guy when I'm not.
--------------------
You're not the bad guy! It's not your responsibility to pay his child support for him - to be honest, I think you're being generous in continuing to pay for the insurance. He needs to man up and face his responsibilities, even if it means taking a job he doesn't want. Stick to your guns - if you give in on this, he'll walk all over you.

What is the cheapest way to restore tooth enamel?

I'm looking for a relatively low-cost way to restore tooth enamel. I know that all of those toothpastes and mouthwashes out there simply strengthen tooth enamel. So, what's the cheapest way, preferably safe and/or through a dentist, that I can restore tooth enamel? I only have minor wear on the ends of my eight front teeth. Generally, veneers, caps, crowns, etc. are thousands of dollars to get. If that's my only option, can anyone give me a price range, per tooth, for any of these options? I have Blue Cross Blue Shield Medical and Dental insurance, so if you do too and have had similar procedures, I'd especially appreciate your advice. Thanks!
--------------------
tip: try to drink from a straw as much as possible. this will help to refrain from losing tooth enamel. find some time and go to your nearest store; try finding a toothpaste and a mouthwash or anything else you can find that says they help strengthen your tooth enamel (Crest has some). look for 'fluoride' in them. there are 3 types and all 3 are good. refrain from using whitening toothpastes; they don't work and weaken your enamel. hope this works! :]

Is it a Spider bite?

On Tuesday, I was running a mile on a track [pe class] and it was foggy (really cold!). I noticed that my left hand hurt and I found my skin ripped a bit and I thought it was just a scratch, no big deal. When I got home to take a shower, it hurt to put water on it, and I washed it with soap. Until it started turning red and it looked more like a spider bite. It's a little smaller than 1/4 of an inch. It hurts when I touch it. And it's very near one of my veins, it's like right beside it. Then I was watching a movie on Friday night. And my sister spotted a spider near me, I was sitting on the carpet. The spider wasn't that big, it was a littler smaller than 1/2 inch. It was like a light tan color. My sister took it outside. Should I just leave it for it to go away on its own? I don't think my parents want take me to the doctor because we don't have medical or dental insurance. I don't think it hurts that much anymore when I touch it. The holes are hard red. I live in California.
--------------------
If the wound gets significantly larger, or gets really hot or swollen, or gets red streaks around it, you HAVE TO get medical care. Otherwise (IMHO), the doctor probably won't know for sure what it is either, and will tell you that it will go way on its own. P.S. It is a tragedy that kids in this country can't get medical care. And I am NOT a liberal. I don't think everyone deserves free medical care, but we have to take care of our kids!

what can i expect dentist/cavities./10 points?

I HAVE NO DENTAL INSURANCE HAVENT BEEN TO THE DENTIST SINCE I WAS 7 OR 8. Well I remember the last time i went to the dentist was before i came to american was about age 7 or 8. I'm currently 17 and I havent been to the dentist ever since. I'm kind of imbarrased all my teeth are straight in the front but if you look mostly in the back there are cavities with the plague thing not that much.. I have 7 cavities... 1 which just started its a tiny no color or nothing just a small tiny hole.. 6 other cavities which i can play in with my tongue (lol) not most of them i got as cavities but all of them have the blue decay thing except the 7th one which started. on the left side of my mouth i have 4 cavities 3 of them have a good not quite so big hole but i can fit my tounge in a little and feel the meat. and the other one just has the plague. on the right side of my mouth i have 3 2 which are very open like the rest and 1 tiny one with no plague on it. There are so many bills in my family right now from all the buying and stuff and its just hard to ask my dad to get these filled...as it might get him mad.. Can who ever is reading this tell me what to expect if i go to the dentist. like how much approx will this all cost to fix? most of the openings are on the top and a couple/few have the decay on the side..its hard to smile sometimes since ppl might recognize... but my teeth are white its just the cavities. I dont have a job going to school still...and im planning to get these filled before next school year. 10 points read here: but how much do you think it will cost to get all this actually done 6 not that big openings and 1 small tiny opening to get filled/cleaned with the compost filling that actually looks like you had nothing done to your teeth since i dont like the silver fillings. How much and what will they do will the dentist be mad?
--------------------
Bottom line is it doesnt matter what it costs you need to get them done or they will just get bigger, which can lead to an infection. then instead of fillings you need root canals and crowns(more money). Noone can tell you exactly but your denstist. every area has different prices. my area a small filling can be about $150 a tooth to a larger one closer to 300. Dentist aren't mad for doing white fillings, but fyi they cost more! they should be ble to work out a payment plan or capital one has a credit card specifically for dental work. here's their application form online: https://secure.capitalonefinance.com/form.asp?plan=DFP&currPage=0&refer=www%2Egoogle%2Ecom%7Ccapital%2Bone%252C%2Bdental

How much do teeth implants cost? And does anyone have experience with them?

So for awhile now the look of my teeth have been really bothering me. They are not straight at all and some are pointy, just not straight at all! I am so insecure about my teeth I never even smile with my mouth open or when I laugh I feel the need to cover my mouth. So I am looking into teeth implants ( at least I think that's what there called). How much are they? With health/dental insurance and all would it be cheaper? Have you ever had them? I hate my teeth! and I would love some feedback. BTW I am 19 years old.

I had Dental Implants in Cancun, only $1,600 each for the post and crown. Saved a lot! and changed my life. I eat better and chew better. Good luck!

Is it ok to ask for a Mercury poisoning test?

I broke a tooth with a silver filling about a year and a half ago. It didnt hurt and I dont have dental insurance so I didnt go to the dentist. 2008 was the worst year of my life as far as panic attacks, anxiety, depression, death of a friend, extreme fatigue (that the doctor cannot help me with it seems) My memory is getting really bad, and my ability to function normally is like dissappearing. I get tingling sensations. My eyelid twitches. my back feels kinda like its tingly numb. I leave out letters and words when I write sometimes. Im having hard time comprehending things. And learning new stuff or problem solving is like so hard I cant do it. Im trying so many things to help w/ all of this diet, exercise, thinking positively, going to therapy and talking about crap I never had to talk about before to see if that is the problem. Some things are a little better but this extreme fatigue and like my cognitive abilities are getting worse. I went to the dentist he said I have mercury amalgam fillings and the broken one is leaking. Well mercury is very toxic. The more I read about it I cant believe they put it in peoples mouths. But there are still people who say its safe. I don't know what to believe. I want to have my blood or urine tested for mercury levels just for my peace of mind. I get extremely tired after eating inspite of trying very hard to keep my blood sugar within safe levels. Could it be that eating aggravates the fillings and Im sensative to mercury? Could it be intensifying my mood swings and making my memory go bad? I have this constant metal taste in my mouth but mercury is odorless and tasteless I hear. If I tell this to a doctor will they just laugh at me or will they give me a mercury test? Im 29 years old and I feel like Im losing my mind and going to have dementia and extreme exhaustion where I wont be able to leave my bed if I dont get to the bottom of this.
--------------------
Just ask him to do it. He should. I had mine test me for lead. You are the one paying him. He shouldn't have aproblem with it. Don't be afraid to ask him. I've thought about doing the same. But most of my dental work has come apart and gone.

Back tooth broke off when eating.?

For a few years my top left, back tooth has hurt when i eat sweets. It would only hurt while eating candy and never bother me at any other time. Yesterday morning i was eating breakfast and about 1/4 of my tooth chipped off. Since it chipped off i can now see there is a light brown spot on the top around my gum line. I dont know what the best options would be for getting it fixed. I dont have dental insurance and i was wondering if someone could give me some ideas on how much certain procedures for the tooth would cost. Thanks :-)

Can I delay my root canal temporarily?

I have major pain and swelling on my pre-molars (both) and went to the dentist today, just to find an periapical abscess at the bottom of the root. She suggested a root canal to save them. Currently, I am a student and cant scrape out $800/tooth for a root canal, and unfortunately dont have dental insurance too. Is it possible to just clean the abscess, stabilize the pressure, take the antibiotics and get a temporary filling for a few months? So, I can go back to my country and get the whole she-bang done there without spending too much now? thanks!

Wisdom tooth problems?

I only have 2 of my wisdom teeth, top right and bottom left. it feels like one is under the gums on the bottom right and it seems like its been this way for a few years. other than that I have 2 problems I don't know what to do about. my top right one frequently hurts and I think its too close to my cheek because I constantly have a sore there and I think it has made a really big scar around the sore area. My bottom left one seems deformed and is still partially covered by gums and has been in this state unchanged for 3+ years. It doesn't hurt but it is rather uncomfortable. both teeth are very hard to brush properly because they are against the back of my jaws where the jaws meet. Should I have them removed or is there something I or the dentist can do about them. If I have the removed about how much will that cost per tooth without dental insurance coverage? If the other teeth come in will I need them removed too? And last of all, exactly what all does tooth removal entail?

Should I screw over my boss?

Background info: he has bounced our paychecks and is now paying me in money orders. I was hired and told i would recieve med and dental insurance, yet I can never utilize it because the ins company says he never pays.I suspect the money he is taking out of my pay money orders.. err i mean checks is not actually going to my taxes ss etc. I also feel sexually harassed. I have been promised for a year a different position yet there is always an excuse. now one catch is that he loaned me $2000 when i needed it the most (car problems) however we are square on that and most. This is also a job in which i have to wear a bikini to work so not something i will ever put on my resume or use as a reference. Now my question is, should i give him 2 weeks notice leaving him with the satisfaction to tell me not to come back or should i drop off my key after work and not say a word and never come back or answer his calls? (thats what id like to do)
--------------------
Normally, I'd say it's good karma to do the right thing and act professional according to your own standards, not based on the actions of others. However, if you feel you have good reason to believe he's going to tell you to not come back after quitting or hassle you with your final paycheck, then it's perfectly justified to quit with zero notice.

my dentist has literally screwed my tooth up.. now what?

1 of my molars required a rootcanal and a cap. i got the root canal done and they put in a temp filling. then after that they NEVER gave me the cap and i went back multiple times. then my tooth finally split and they just kept giving me temp fillings and temp fillings. now im at the point where the filling is still in my my tooth is crumbling a part. it split off on 1 side and now i feel my tooth (half of it) shaking around. WHAT THE HELL DO I DO. i feel like i should just get this thing pulled out instead of these assholes jerking my money. and btw i have dental insurance. and money isnt a problem. and i had another cap done. on the opposite side of my mouth successfully.
--------------------
Hello..Ok..Assuming the information you have provided is totally accurate here is what you do. You file a formal complaint with the your "State Dental Board"... they should place you in contact with a neutral dentist who is part of what they call the "Peer Review Board"...If the peer review dentist agrees with your accusations the Dental Board will and can take a number of actions . One would be to have the tooth in questions properly dealt with by another dentist and the offending dentist will have to pay the cost. The Board may also call him in for a disciplinary hearing that could result in his license being pulled for a period of time and he could also be required to take continuing education courses and retested ...You would also have the option of filing a mal practice suit. Good luck and I wish you well. The Denture Pro.

What procedure do I need to go through to have several teeth "replaced"?

It's an embarrassing problem - but I have several teeth (molars) that are broken and need to be replaced. Two are basically gone, and two are like half gone. I also need two wisdom teeth removed. I have dental insurance, but I think it only covers up to $500 per year. I don't really have a lot of money to pay up front for a major procedure, but could afford monthly payments of some nature. Is this usually an option? Whatever procedure I have done, I want it to be subtle and kinda secret, as it is kind of embarrassing. My front teeth are fine, so it's not like I need dentures... Can anyone tell me what I need to go through, what it'll cost me, and how much time off from work I will need to get this fixed?
--------------------
I will try my best to address all your concerns. I would sit down with the finance person in your dental office and prioritize what has to be done right away and which tooth can wait a few months. Once that is clear..you can pick to do 2 teeth/year. Unfortunately, your ins doesn't cover much. An average crown can cause upwards of $800-1500/tooth. Depending on your treatment, a crown typically req'd 2 visits. Most dental procedure does not req'd time off from work. i rec for you to plan your extractions around long weekends so you have some time to rest afterwards.
Source

Why are dentures such a bad thing (sort of long--sorry!)?

To make a long story short, I had weight loss surgery 8 years ago and since then, my teeth are in horrible shape. Since surgery, I've had 3 root canals (and I need two more!), three extractions, four crowns, and most recently, a permanent bridge ($2,500 out of pocket because I maxed out my dental insurance two weeks after the first of the year). I can't even begin to count how many cavities I've had filled. For every one I have filled, two more pop up. (I'm being perfectly serious here...I really DO have new cavities at every office visit. The more I try to do for my teeth (brush on prescription fluoride, more frequent brushing/flossing, special mouth washes, etc., NOTHING is working. My teeth continue to deteriorate. Nothing can be done about this, yet my dentist will not pull my teeth and let me get dentures. Any advice? I know it's always better to try to save your real teeth if you can, but this is getting ridiculous. There is nothing that can be done for my teeth. I have fillings in every single tooth in my head (save for the crowns, of course) and now I'm getting cavities underneath old fillings. (And they're not childhood fillings--these are fillings from the last two or three years). Help!
--------------------
Well you have a frustrating problem...for you and the dentist. Decay rate is tough to treat. First off tips on how to avoid problems: 1. Stay hydrated...meaning water. Decay rate often is higher in those who mouths are dry. Try water, surgarless gums and mints, or anything else without surgar that will increase saliva. Avoid things that dry out your mouth (alcohol (this includes listerine, scope), and caffeine. 2. Brush and floss twice daily and consider forking over the money for a sonicare toothbrush. These brushes are designed to take technique out of brushing and can help 3. Fluoride rinses and pastes can help 4. In order to help yourself, you have to understand how decay works....anytime you eat something with surgar the acidity level rises (the bacteria related to decay produce an acid and its the acid that breaks down the tooth). Your saliva helps bring this down to normal but it takes time and it varies from person to person. My worst decayers are sippers...they tend to buy a huge pop or coffee with cream and surgar and sip on it for hours throughout the day...bad bad bad. the acidity level remains high and decay rate is enormous. Fluroide makes your teeth less sensitive to the acidity level, nothing else. I tell my patients often it's not what you eat, its how often that is important. 5. Because acidity really affects decay, make sure you avoid acidic foods as much as you can, get reflux treated and consider taking tums after meals (while it has surgar in it it supplies calcium and reduces that acidity) 6. Finally get a scond opinion....it may not be you. I don't want to say your dentist is bad because he/she could be doing everything right but it could be that his fillings aren't perfect which is why they are re-decaying so consider a 2nd opinion. As for dentures...the reason why people avoid them is because they are so hard to get used to. They are hard to keep clean. They are hard to get perfect fits and in general will never be as good as your real teeth. Also without teeth there is very little reason to have a lower jaw (it's growth is really affected by the ligaments that suport your teeth. As one without teeth gets older the bone slowly dimishes and often toward the latter years....there is very little jaw left and almost no support for a denture. This is why the longer you can prolong getting a denture the better. If you do go denture rout though consider implants...while they are very expensive they don't decay

Should I pul a tooth?

I'm an adult (21 yrs old, really, but you know) but i still have a baby tooth. It's a molar, without an adult tooth underneath it, which is why I've never lost this tooth. However, about a year ago, the tooth started to chip along the gum line, which has been a real problem. Food and plaque are constantly getting stuck inside the tooth which is realllllyyy gross and requires a lot of time to clean. About a couple weeks ago the tooth became loose, and now cleaning it means that the tooth starts to wiggle and because of that, it's now really loose. If i still had dental insurance I'd go see a dentist immediately, but I just graduated from college and have yet to secure a decent job with benefits. So I was wondering should I just pull the tooth and be done with the matter? Thanks in advance.
--------------------
If it is loose, and you don't mind, it is ok to pull it....as it was a baby tooth, the roots are mostly resorbed now, and is probably being held in place by tissue (that is why it is loose).... You can ice it, then keep wiggling it, it will probably feel better once it is out and you can keep the area clean. There will probably be a little bleeding, and after it is out you can bite on a clean gauze or wash cloth to control that.... Not to worry.....you've done this before, but its been a few years!!

Slight irritation with crown on tooth?

I got a crown on a tooth on my lower left side. It was a tooth on which I got my first cavity (when they used the silver filling). Anyway, I got the crown last August and things for the most part have been fine. However, lately I've been getting some slight discomfort in the area of that tooth. It's not pain, but I notice it from time to time. It's kind of the same feeling I had before with the tooth before the crown. But that discomfort was never that bad that it made me go to the dentist to get it fixed. The dentist recommended the crown on one of my twice-a-year cleanings. I have a cleaning scheduled 2 weeks from today, but it's with a different dentist. There was a financial dispute with the price of the crown at my previous dentist (was quoted a different price and the final bill showed I owed more than $200 than I was originally told). That dentist told me if I didn't get a crown at that time that I would need a root canal. I'm hoping that it hasn't come to that. A crown cost almost $750 with dental insurance and a root canal is even more. Is this discomfort normal from time to time? Or am I on my way to a root canal?
--------------------
hard to tell without looking at an X-ray and clinical examination.also can you add more details about the discomfort which you are feeling from time to time? is your crown made of gold or tooth colored material? when do you feel the pain? is it sensitive to temperature? is it hurting when you are eating? when did it started? more detail, better.

Is this a cavity or just my sensitive teeth?

I have bad teeth, I've had fillings done on almost all of my molars. I recently began to have a pain that flares up in response to hot, cold, or sweets. But if I run to the bathroom and brush my teeth with sensodyne toothpaste, the pain recedes completely. I've been told that it is possible that I won't need a filling done. I am at my yearly dental insurance limit and I am not in a position where I can afford another cavity filling. My question is simply: Does anyone out there have sensitive teeth? And, in your experience, is it possible that by reducing my sugar intake and brushing much more frequently I can postpone going to the dentist for a few months?
--------------------
based on your description i think it can be due to one of the following dental caries pulpitis(mostly reversible as per your description) cracked tooth gingival recession i have experienced sensitive teeth.though i brush frequently with sensodyne tooth paste,it is temporary measure only.got permanent relief after getting treated by a dentist only. so find out the cause what causes sensitivity and treat it as early as possible. coming to second part of your question, yes by reducing sugar intake,it is possible to reduce dental caries and cavities. brushing teeth will also helps to maintain oral hygeine.good luck

My lower gums have a growth on them...?

I should start by saying I am more than 8 months pregnant- right from the beginnning of this pregnancy my gums have been tender and bled a lot. About a month or two ago, I started getting what I can only describe as "growths" on my lower front gums. It is very strange.. It doesn't hurt, it covers the width of about 2 of my front bottom teeth, and is growing upward, to the point where it is practically covering the two teeth that is behind it. My dental insurance will kick in next week, so I will be able to make an appt very soon, but I am also due to have the baby soon, so I'm assuming they can't do anything about it until then.. but I am very nervous and self conscious about it.. does anyone have any ideas what it could be?
--------------------
Your baby is stealing nutrients from your body... My mom never had a cavity until after her first baby, because her body took calcium from her teeth. Sounds strange, but I am sure the dentist can help you out, and can maybe even subscribe safe supplements for you! Congratulations on the baby too! :)
