DENTAL BILL from a large dental chain: they hit me with a 2nd bill after having me put $ on a card ...?

...that they said was my part of the charges after insurance! This 2nd large bill (about 3/4 of what I already put on their recommended card) came 2 months after my last visit. What can I do? This seems like it should be illegal, I was told what I put on their card was it for my costs.
--------------------
There is no reason to conclude from what you've said that anything is "illegal." You provide no specifics concerning the billing, your insurance and what you signed. It sounds like part of what they thought would be covered by insurance was denied, in which case you ARE responsible for the costs. What do your insurance EOBs say?

What is a good, inexpensive.......?

health/dental insurance for the small business owner? All the quotes I'm getting so far from Blue Cross and such are outrageous. Any advice or experience in this area?

I have a horrible toothache and I found an old...?

prescription with two pills left that the dentist gave me when I had my wisdom teeth pulled. I don't have dental insurance and my husband lost his job a month ago. It's called hydrocodone. Is this ok to take for this reason?
--------------------
That is a pain medication that will help temporarily with the pain. If you have a toothache, you probably have an infection in that particular tooth and you will also need an antibiotic from your dentist. Two pain pills aren't going to last very long. Also, for discomfort, you can take 800 mg of Ibuprofen which is prescription strength... it has an anti-inflammatory in it so it's going to work better than Tylenol or aspirin. Well, Snowboarding.... I "just know this kinda stuff" too... and if you would have read what she wrote, the prescription was HERS that the dentist had given to her when her wisdom teeth were removied. So it was HER prescription... not someone else's. And even if the pills have expired, they aren't going to kill her.. they'll just be weaker and won't have the same affect. And she was just asking if it was ok to take for her toothache... she didn't ask for a dissertation on her condition.

Swollen gums and a bump around two teeth with cavities.?

For about 2 or 3 days I have had swollen gums and a soft bump in the back on my mouth next to two teeth that have cavities. I'm pregnant, and don't have dental insurance. Does anyone know if I should just try and "pop" the bump myself? It's very painful, and it's keeping me from eating. Any help would be great.
--------------------
Sounds like you have some kind of infection going on there, kinda hard to say without proper xrays you really should see a dentist, it will get worse and could affect your baby

Urgent Dental Care Needed & No Inurance. Please Help!?

My boyfriend has 4 impacted wisdom teeth that have been pushing on the rest of his teeth for about a year now. Last night one of his molars cracked in half to expose the root of the tooth. It is hurting him bad enough that he is getting physically ill from it. We have been using dental creams and the like on his gums to relieve the pain since we do not have insurance at this time or any extra money to be able to afford the surgery. Does anyone know where we can get an inexpensive help?? Ideally all 4 of his wisdom teeth need to be removed and the now broken tooth. All of the insurance providers I have looked at will not cover the surgery if we sign up immediately we have to wait a year. Please Help! We are in Oklahoma.
--------------------
You should call a dental college in your area. Usually, the general public can make appointments to see dental students, who are going to school to become dentists or dental hygienists. The services they provide are at a significantly reduced price. Check out the U of O website: http://gradschool.about.com/gi/dynamic/o… In the meantime for pain, give your BF 1000 mg of advil or tylenol every 4 hours. That would be 4 200 mg pills (check the bottle). This will significantly help with the pain.

Lack of Dental Hygienist Benefits?

I am starting to take the steps to educate myself to become a dental hygienist. As I was reading some answers to various DH posts I noticed one that mentioned the lack of benefits dent. hyg. have. For the most part I am so intrigued by the field of dentistry and orthodontics as I have had this feeling for years but it did make me think for a split second. They mentioned not having sick time, insurance, retirement, etc..to have a good support system if kids are sick..I mean right now that doesn't worry me so much as I am in my 20s and don't have kids. I wonder does it just depend on the dentist you find to work for? Seems that was the only post I saw mention it.. On a side note- I love orthodontics! Are dental hygienists trained to be able to work in those specialty offices or is it only dental offices? Do most orthos only hire dental assistants and not hygienists? Thanks :))
--------------------
1. The benefits offered at any job varies with the office that you choose. So, shop around. 2. Most likely you are NOT going to get benefits like insurance, retirement, etc. at a part-time position. 3. Any full-time position is legally required to offer you sick time, insurance, retirement, etc.. as a benefit package. 4. However, the amount of the sick time and paid time off increases with the length of employment. 5. Most of the jobs do not allow sick days for the first 3 to 6 months of employment (i.e., during the probation period). Working at an ORTHODONTIC PRACTICE can be a benefit because : 6. The pay will be higher because the practice itself will be making more money than an ordinary office :) 7. The cleaning will be easier than doing conventional adult prophy and / or scaling and root planing ("deep cleaning"). So, it won't be too hard on your hands. 8. It will be pleasant, provided you like working with kids / children. Good luck with your job search !!

How much is corrective jaw surgery cost? (Underbite)?

I don't have severe case but you can definitely notice my jaw is irregular. I'm a chronic mouth breather and that's probably the cause. I have insurance from work(regeance preferred), the work also gives me separate dental which is different insurance company. What's the price range for the surgery if the insurance doesn't cover it.
--------------------
You have 3 options. The first is a very involved surgery where they literally remove the lower jaw and move it forward. It involves several doctors and a dentist to create a new bite. This is a very major surgery and, thus, quite expensive. I cannot give you a price range for this. There are 2 options that are much easier, with just 5-7 days downtime, and far cheaper. The first is a sliding Genioplasty. This is where the doctor saws off a small part of your lower jaw and moves it forward, securing it with titanium screws. You could also consider a chin implant (which I regret not getting). This will give quite dramatic results, but may not look as natural as the other methods. These 2 options will both total approx. $2500-$4,000, depending on where you live and your doctor. Insurance will probably not pay for any of these procedures b/c they'll consider it elective cosmetic surgery.

I'm looking for health insurance! I need help! Please.?

I see the difference in prices, copayments and annual deductables. But I'm not sure I know what everything means. I'm from PA, 23 years old, havent had insurance since I was 19. I want something that includes dental. I'm willing to pay UP TO $250 a month. Thats the absoulte max and I really cant afford that either. I just need to know what to look for so I dont get ripped off! P.S. What does PPO mean? Thank you for your help!
--------------------
The whole thing is a rip-off. Be sure to inform your Senators and Representative of the result of your search. There are two main kinds of insurance, HMO and PPO. HMO is Health Maintenance Organization and PPO is Preferred Provider. With HMO, you use their doctors, period. With PPO, you can use member doctors for a co-pay , or you can use out-of-network and they pay some percentage, depending on the plan. The price if you are getting it yourself is higher than in a group of any kind. But since you are young, it should be a better than normal rate, provided you don't need health insurance. If they think you have any reason to need health insurance (known as a pre-existing condition) they will either charge a lot or not sell you a plan. As for dental, most plans don't cover it. There are separate dental plans; for instance Aetna has one.

Can someone help with my Cobra Insurance situation?

My cobra insurance was terminated last year in December because I did not make any payments. I thought that my payments were being automatically taken from my banking account, but I had mistaken another bill with a similar amount as being the cobra bill. Anyway, I was told that I could write a maximum of 2 appeals. The second would be written to my job and they would determine if they would continue coverage. I don't exactly know what to put in my letter to my employer regarding my coverage. It's the high option dental coverage. In the first letter I wrote this: Hello, my name is _______. My account number is ____________. I am appealing my election of the high option dental plan for myself. I am also appealing because I did not know my coverage was terminated until I called the customer service department today. I was under the impression that my monthly payments of $31.00 were automatically being taken from my bank account. I would be greatly appreciative if my dental coverage were to be reinstated. Thank you for your time. This is the second appeal I am writing: Hello. My name is _________. My account number is _______. I am writing in regards of my election of the high option dental plan for myself. I am appealing because I did not know that my coverage was terminated until I called the Customer Service Department a few days ago. Through fault of my own I was under the impression that the payments were automatically being deducted from my banking account, yet, I had mistaken the payments of another bill similar in amount with my Cobra bill. However, it was not my intention that this missed payment be interpreted as a notice that I wished to discontinue my coverage. I would appreciate consideration that you reinstate my COBRA coverage back dated to December 1, 2009 and if this appeal is accepted I will remit payments equal to the cost of coverage through the end of December. I will have no problem paying on time. I need dental benefits very much. I need four wisdom teeth taken out among other services that need to be taken care of. I am a full time student attending college. Thank you for your time. That might sound cheesy but I am nervous. This is my last chance and I really need to get this right. I need this insurance very much. I absolutely can not afford to wait 6 months with private insurance. This is the only benefit that I chose to keep when I got my coverage. Should I tell them what else needs to be done with my teeth? That I have car payments every two weeks? That I am in college? HELP! Thanks!

Dental HELP PLEASE!!!!!!?

I am in soo much pain anymore. I have let this go to long. I just have not had any insurance to help me at all. Does anyone know of any full coverage dental plans? They all seem to have major restrictions. I would like to have major work done without big upfront costs. I am more than happy to pay it over a long haul but cant justify it all at once. I'm really at the point now where I would rather just get all fake teeth but can not afford that either. For about 2 years I have had to eat on my left side of my mouth due to my right side being extremely bad and a rotten tooth. Now my left side is in horrible pain as well. HELP PLEEEEASE!!! :(
--------------------
There is a full coverage dental plan from AmeriPlan USA. It is $19.95 a month and covers everything dental related. You save about 30-80% on all dental services, (depending on where you live of course). you can still get the great discounts, and only have the work done as needed. This plan also offers free coverage at no extra charge for prescription drugs, vision and chiropractic care as well.. so after the dental work, if you get a prescription for the pain, you can get 25% off name brand and 50% off generics!

help...need pregnancy insurance, college student?

I need some opinions or someone who knos from personal experience! I am a college student, 20 years old, and I am about 7weeks pregnant. My dad has me under his BCBSNC insurance (but it does not cover anything maternity or prenatal visits!!!) My dad wont allow that to his insurance policy. But i am covered in regualr doc checkups er visits, dental and some others because i am listed under his policy (me and my brothers). So the lady that does insurance at OBGYN told me that I would probably be eligiable for medicaid. Like I said, I am 20 years old, in college, live in a dormitory on campus, i have proof of identifcation, residence, I have a part time job and make 7.75/hr, i have bank statements, and can provide proof of employment as well as SS card and BirthCert.as well as proof of pregnancy! I just want the *Pregnancy medicaid*(the medicaid that is just strictly for maternal visits and prenatal care)... Will i still be able to qualify is my question?! i have no idea, I called the social services today and they never answered for 3hrs...so im trying to get an idea of what to expect. im a lil worried. i need this pregnancy medicaid to go to appointments....honestly i can not afford 700 dollars everytime i go.

Tricare Emergency Dental?

Ok so my wife got her tooth cut in half by a skateboard flying over a bouncy house while supervising and i just found out like many people that dental isn't covered in tricare its a separate program, i think her nerve is exposed and i don't want to spend 2 grand to get it fixed without insurance, they told me it would be a month before we are covered, does regular tricare cover emergency dental until our regular dental goes through? obviously we don't get paid enough to cover all this ourselves, but i was never told anything about separate dental. Thanks guys =)
--------------------
you should have gone immediately to the ER. Trcicare would have covered that. now since you have waited, they may not. Tricare covers a very limited amount of certain dental issues.

Dental Crowning to deal with Bruxism?

Hi guys! I have an issue with bruxism. I grind my teeth at night and my teeth are worn own, especially my bottom front row. My cousin thinks it's no big deal and that it's not noticeable.. BUT I NOTICE IT!! I have really good medical insurance through my employer and I want to know if anyone here has dental crowns. I've looked online and it's all advertising for dentists. How do you like them? Do they have that movie star look? How did the procedure go? How is day to day living with them and most importantly, how much did it cost you? Thank you for your answers!!
--------------------
Crowns normally cost around $850 more or less. If you grind your teeth, the first thing you should look into is a night guard. You can stop wearing down your teeth. Then after that you can look into crowns. :) *I noticed you said Medical Insurance it is Dental Insurance that you need. Not sure if you have it or not.

horrible tooth pain and no insurance?

for the past few months I've been having a really bad tooth ache. At first it was minor but has been getting worse everytime. My tooth has some discoloration and a small little chip on the inside. I think I might need a root canal which is very pricey. I am currently unemployed so I have no insurance. Has anyone ever been in this situation? Will a dental school allow a student to do root canal? I really do not have money to pay for a root canal but this pain is truely unbearable, any advise...I dont want to lose my tooth :( I also tried applying for medicaid but was denied because they said i have to file for unemployment and i was denied for that as well.

Front tooth pain + metal taste in mouth?

My front tooth hurts alot, and around the base it is kinda caved in and turning greyish/blackish in its root. I do not currently have dental insurance, and am getting married the 29th. I plan to call a dentist first thing Monday morning, and hopefully pay with payments. But my question is, does anyone know whats going on? What could the discoloration be, and what about the metal taste? Thanks!
--------------------
did you bump yourself recently? metal taste is blood, you may have an infection starting, if its been like this awhile, then it could very well be the start of dental disease, which ever although you don't have dental insurance, try locating a local dentist on line that will do dental work at a small cost, some go by your income, bring some pay stubs and they will let you know how much to pay, or try a local, aspen dental, they are very good and work out payment plans with you. i hope everything works out for you. good luck

Dental professionals, what would you do in this circumstance?

Uncomfortable situation involving two dentists: Dentist A is a specialist in craniofacial/TMD. He is well-known in his field, and has helped me in the past with my TMJD. Dentist B is the president of my state's dental board, and is also a well-respected expert in his given field. Dentist B, the pres. of the dental board indicates to me that Dentist A didn't do a very good job with my bite splint and that he would like me to see Dentist C. I told Dentist B that Dentist A had already indicated he would construct a new bite-splint if necessary. Then Dentist B said, that to be honest, he recommended I not see Dentist A at all. When I inquired as to why, he said he wasn't at liberty to say, but, the reason was professional in nature. Yikes! Alrighty then... if the pres. of the dental board is saying that, he must have good reason. Not a problem really, all I want is good care. Here is my dilemma: I have prepaid for six months of service with Dentist A, which is currently about 70% complete. Can or should I expect a refund of the remaining balance on the unrendered services (about $900)? If you think it is reasonable to expect a refund, how would you go about it? Do I flat out tell Dentist A that Dentist B prefer I not see him? Make up some lie, like I am moving, or what? I have a lot of dental anxiety to begin with, so this is really chewing me up (no pun intended). I keep having flash-forwards where I have to give testimony in a lawsuit and end up with no dentists. My insurance doesn't cover TMJ so the money is a real issue for me. I would like to be able to recover if I am now to pay Dentist C. I appreciate any advice you can give.
--------------------
hmm well i would say the only thing that matters if what you feel comfortable with. if dentist A has helped you and you trust that dentist and feel comfortable being treated by that dentist then i would say stay with him. just because one dentist tells you not to go see him, and doesnt give an explanation then i wouldnt rely on what he said even if he is the the president of the dental board. but thats just my opinion. you are the patient and you need to feel comfortable with what is being done to you!

Do anyone know of an alternative dental plan that I can add with my career provided plan?

Hepatitis C Transmission through dental tools?

Hi,.sadly the Hep C (the silent killer) could be contracted through dental tools but, after hours and hours of searching the net I couldn't nail a study or statistic about Heptatitis C transmission through dental tools, and I feel like such important aspect is not really covered. I really wish to know how often such scary incident of Hep C transmission happen in America and specially in a place like California. Does anyone know a link or website or share his own knowledge about Heptatis C transmission through dental tools. Also as a person who lives in the united states I know that there is some high level of dental sterilization at least for the majority of dental offices. but what's the safety net for any breach in such standards...I mean how often they are scanned or visited by health officials to check the quality of sterilization in a given dental office. Can anyone explain how the sterilization inspection happens and how often does it happen? Does the insurance companies send inspectors to report any violation? thanks in advance.
--------------------
the state board of dental examiners do check sterilization, but the thing is, its not a problem for us to sterilize instruments... its just a part of the job, we are trained to do it, its done with every instrument. the dentist is particular about it, we are particular about it. if a patient gets sick from a dental tool in our office, we could all lose our licenses, every dental assistant i know has the mentality of "would i put that in MY mouth, or my child's mouth?" ... so i hope this has put your mind at ease. all instruments are put into a sterilizer or auto clave, there is no chance of hep c.

I know a good medical/dental health benefit plan. It's not insurance though. It's discounted benefits, I don't know If thats something you would be interested in, but it's an option to look into, especially because it is very affordable. AmeriPlan is the name of the company and they offer a medical/dental plan for $39.95 a month. You would be able to put your son on at no extra cost, that monthly fee stays the same and you can add anyone living in your household (up to 20 people). Is it illegal for a dentist to not allow parents into the room where their child is getting dental work?

To make a very very very long story as short as possible..My daughters dad took our daughter to the dentist where they told him she had 2 cavities and needed to get some dental work done. Basically he said the dentist told him he wasn't allowed in the room because he was going to make her nervous. He said he wasn't ok with it but went to the lobby anyways. After being in the lobby for 10 minutes he said he "needed" to use the restroom and instead of going to the restroom went to check up on her. He said the curtains were closed (they don't have doors) and that he slightly opened it and saw my daughter had tears, had her hands & legs restrained and that he heard the dental assistant (a guy) telling her you better stop moving or we're going to give you a bigger injection so you can fall asleep and when you wake up it's going to hurt even more. He said when the dentist saw him peeking that he got up and told him to wait in the lobby that he wasn't allowed and my daughters dad said he said no, I will not wait outside, untie her, finish doing what you're doing and I will never come back here and proceeded to tell the dental assistant who the hell he thought he was to scare her that way. So he said again the dentist insisted in him waiting outside, and my daughters dad told him I'll be damned to leave my daughter in a room with 2 men. Which I know was totally uncalled but then again the world is a crazy place. Anywho, he said there was a back and forth of words and that at the end the dentist said he wasn't going to work on her cativities, to take her somewhere else. Fortunately, he had just numbed her and hadn't drilled yet. I called our insurance but it's already closed. I called the dental office but all the receptionist said was that we would be hearing from the dentists lawyer, that they were going to sue my daughters dad for defamation of character. I completely understand where the dentist is coming from (I know my daughters dad can be pretty nasty) but then again isn't it illegal to keep a parent out of the room where their child is getting any kind of medical procedure done?
--------------------
I don't think it's illegal. I think it's up to the dentist to say. But, her father had every right to pull her out of there. He doesn't have to force his child to be anywhere. She can get her teeth fixed somewhere else. I doubt they have a case or will even push it. They probably felt threatened thinking he might sue. I would just hope and pray it all blows over. Your daughter on the other hand is going to be terrified to go to the dentist now. How old is she? Can you take her to a pediatric dentist?

Stop payment on check for dental sedation that didnt work?

My 12 year old son has to have sedation when he has dental work done, we have recently switche ddentists because of a change in insurance. Anyways, he went into the dentist yesterday and I had to pay $165 for the sedation becasue it isn't covered by insurance, anyways he was supposedly given versed ($125) and laughing gas ($40), well this did nothing at all and they were not able to do any work on him. I was still charged the $165 because they gave him meds. I do not mind paying something but do not feel i should have to pay the full price, i am sure they mark up what they pay for it. Anyways I am now out almost $200 and have to find a new dentist & pay again. My son has had many surgeried and never had sedation not work for him. I think he was given an incorrect doseage or something. What would happen if i stop payment on the check
--------------------
What would happen? You'd get sued for the amount of the check. You don't KNOW what happened...everyone reacts to things differently.

Could this be my wisdom teeth coming in?

I have been having pain that is coming and going in the left side of my mouth. It starts at my jaw and then spreads down the lower side of my mouth. It has been going on for a couple of weeks. The pain is relieved by taking Tylenol and the like. I have not noticed any teeth coming in yet. The thing is though that my families health insurance doesn't cover the cost of dental appointments and the like. Does this sound like wisdom teeth? I am 17 years old.
--------------------
That definitely sounds like wisdom teeth coming in. I understand your concern with the cost of dental appointments; in your situation I'd say only go if it gets so unbearable that you can't function properly. Rememer that not everyone has to have their wisdom teeth removed, and you may just be experiencing teething pain.
