My 5 year old seems to have "loose" gums. Is this normal?

Her teeth are not loose, her gums are not puffy, bleeding, or exhibiting any signs of gingivitis. They appear normal and healthy visually. They just seem to move around very easily when they are touched. She sometimes complains they hurt. We do not have dental insurance so I cant easily take her to the dentist, but I will if its a real problem. Any input?
--------------------
If the teeth are firmly seated, and the gums appear visually healthy, any normal person would assume they're healthy. The fact that they're soft is not a good sign, but it's far too difficult to know what it might signal without a chance to examine her. The problem is, she says they hurt. "Gums" are not a common thing for a 5-year old to complain about, so you should be concerned. Pain is the most significant symptom in this case, so I'd suggest you try, at the very least, to get a basic dental examination done. They may or may not suggest any kind of treatment, but that way you will know if it is serious. If it's minor, you won't pay anything more than the exam fee. If it's something that needs attention, you'll be glad you got it checked. She needs to get many a few more years out of those teeth, and a lot more out of her gums and jaw. PS - you might be avoiding taking her to the dentist because your somewhat worried about what it could cost if something's wrong. You should get over this. It's like someone who doesn't want to take their car to a mechanic - they might find something broken that needs fixing, which will cost money. So, they leave the probem, and in the end they need to spend 20 times as much to replace the whole engine.

What company do you have your health insurance through?

We currently have BCBS medical insurance with dental and the price keeps going up and up. I am seriously thinking about switching companies. Can anyone recommend a company that I can switch to? Years ago we had a insurance where we got a prescription card and access to a 1-800 # where we could call an talk to a nurse anytime. All we ever paid was our co-pays at the doctor's office and the insurance was great. We have had BCBS for years now and after we pay our co-pays we get little bills here and there. We have no prescription card and we are paying A LOT for insurance each month. Any suggestions?
--------------------
Mine's with Cigna EVERYONE'S insurance is going up. Utilization, according to Consumer Reports, in 2005, was about $500 per month, for every man, woman, and child in the USA. Nowadays, the average family plan costs about $1200 a month, which is less than utilization. Feel free to shop around. BCBS is one of the better companies. But cheaper ONLY means, cutting coverages, or increasing deductibles.

Are dental crowns covered under FSA accounts?

I am fairly sure they are but I want to hear from someone that has used it for one. Please do not answer unless you know for sure. I used up my benefit threw my work insurance. they alow only 1 crown every 5 years and I need to get a few more so I am thinking of signing up for an FSA account card for 2010 so i can get the work done and save my teeth.
--------------------
My crown was covered by my FSA - but I had insurance cover the their portion first and filed my balance against the FSA. The only was to be 100% sure is to ask your FSA plan administrator.

I think my doc is going to make me do Labs annually --> I can pay for the labs but it be great if i can save money as well! I am guessing id have to wait 12 months to get health insurance My questions Any way around 12 months is it 12 months on all states, what about Mississippi? My company offers it but its like $200/month and i cant afford that! Im a female, non smoker, and in good health. I just need basic health insurance that has dental and eye. What are some good options out there?
--------------------
Hello, if you live in California, Blue Cross has a plan called "Tonik". It covers medical, emergency visits, doctor visits, dental and vision. Rates are lower than most health plans because they only advertise this plan on the internet. You may want to check it out. Good luck. http://lamontinsurance.com/tonik/tonik.health.html http://lamontinsurance.com/tonik/tonik.chart.html

Is it legal for a security guard to NOT have health insurance?

I work as a security guard for a power plant company and I don't get anything at all resembling insurance (health, dental or otherwise). I was with a company about 2 years ago (at the same facility) that had insurance (health, dental and otherwise), but their contract was not renewed and this new company came in and stripped us of all insurance privileges (despite having in their handbook that insurance is available for employees "that qualify"). I sit in a building that is right under a smokestack spewing God knows what into the air and the building has a large amount of asbestos in it from the days when "asbestos is ok". I was just wondering if there is any sort of "Security Guard Code" that states that I should be entitled insurance.
--------------------
No, sorry, insurance from the employer is a benefit, and they aren't required to provide it.

Selling artwork for medical expenses - professional or desperate?

I am an artist (painter) who has a full time job and health/dental insurance. I recently had an exhibit and sold a few paintings. Though I work as a web content copywriter, and I do occasionally sell some work, I have just found out that I must undergo very expensive dental work, of which my insurance will only cover about 20% of the cost. This will leave me with a bill of around $4,125.00. The work has to be done, I've avoided it for too long. I was thinking about how I can afford to pay for this. It occured to me that I have many drawings, prints and small paintings that I could sell for very reasonable prices ($30-50), and I've considered sending out a group e mail to friends and associates in the hope that some may be interested in purchasing, or perhaps sending along to friends for purchasing. I wanted some advice about 1) if this is professional or 2) would it seem like a desperate move? Also, 3) what are other ways to more successfully fund these health costs? Thanks
--------------------
I don't think it's desperate, or unprofessional...how about just necessary. I wouldn't price your pieces to sell, however... as you're undermining yourself for current and future pieces. Time to have another one man show?

I'm getting a dental crown, what is a "adjunctive pro/ gld in"?

I was looking at an itemized list that my dentist sent, they include a Crown, the buildup w/ pins (covered by insurance) and a third item, $100 not covered called "unspecified adjunctive pro/ gld in...". The text cuts off after in, I'm assuming it means inset or inlet. I don't understand what this is. Anyone know?
--------------------
Request an explanation and ask for a specific description of the charge. You should never have a statement that says you owe for an "Unspecified" procedure or material. Your entitled to an explanation.

I'm pretty sure this happened, because the back of my teeth are now soft, and I could feel slivers of hard flakey material coming off of them, I tried to clean my teeth with those metal picks from the pharmacy. I have no dental insurance and I'm broke. (hench trying to clean my own teeth.) It will be a while before seeing a dentist, what can I do in the meantime to help?

I am 21yo guy and the last time i went to a dentist (i cant anymore cause my parents dental insurance somehow found out i wasnt working or in school.. although i dont know why they do that) they found i had slight gum recession and said they cant stop it. The only thing i could do is a gum graft but the gums can still receed. If there is no way to stop it im gonna kill myself. I wont live like this!!!!

Are you brushing too hard? Use a soft bristle brush and brush lightly. Brushing too hard can actually cause recession.

free dental programs?

I have exstensive dental problems but can't get a job because of it and have no insurance is there any free dental programs in chicago that could possibly help me with this problem?
--------------------
There should be free dental clinics in your area, check your yellow pages. Also look for local colleges that have dental schools. Treatment can be done for minimal costs, although you have to keep in mind that it is a learning facility so be prepared to spend some time there. I'm not sure about any major dental work, but maybe they can steer you in the right direction. Best wishes!

Questions about braces. & Insurance!?!? please answer (:?

Okay, I'm about to be 14 & I live in Ohio(No idea if that's needed?). But anyways, my parents have Aetna Insurance & I do believe dental is included. I have not so good of teeth... ha ha, so I was wondering 1. If anyone knew how much the insurance would pay for braces? 2. I need fillings(2 cavities) Do I have to have the fillings put in first before I can get braces? &3. How bad does it REALLY hurt, spacers, the braces, ect ect. & any tips on how to make it subside? THANKS SO MUCH!!
--------------------
ok. so heres the deal. i had Healthy Kids Insurance (its some florida citizen insurance) and its really good, but i did not cover braces AT ALL, because its something cosmetic. lets face it, if you dont get braces... you'll still live. but it did fully cover cavities, so yours probably will too. my braces didnt hurt at all, but my teeth were pretty straight. the spacers are uncomfortable, but fun to play with. rubber bands come later, and those hurt a bit. but trust me, everything is worth it, cause once they take them off, you will be nothing but smiles. ... except your teeth will feel really mushy. i dont know why.

How much do dental procedures coast if you have to pay out of pocket?

I have no insurance. I may need dental work. I have not been to the dentist in Three years, because I can't afford it. I need to go to a Dentist before I lose my teeth. How much can you expect to pay for: One filling? Root canal? one Cap? Having a tooth pulled? a fake replacement tooth? The coast of a Dentist to to the work? Etc. Each one individually. As well as just a routine visit and cleaning? I don't know what type of work, if any, I may need on my teeth. I just need to know aprox. how much I will have to pay if I need something done on my teeth. Where can I look up additional information on this?

Best to see a dentist for a quote Filling $75- $300 Root canal $650- $1200 Cap $950- $1500 Fake replacement tooth $150- $3300

You'll have to ask your particular dentist what they'd charge. Is there a dental school near you? They often give reduced rates to patients in return for letting the students observe and sometimes help out on the procedures.

Dental fees to be paid up front normal?

I have always seen either my grandfater (dentist) or the dentist my mother has worked for (she's a hygenist), but now I live far enough away that I have to find my own dentist. So after much procrastinating, and now with some pain I go see a dentist. My 22 year old fillings are failing and I need a couple of crowns. I don't have any issue with the diagnosis. BUT, the office manager tried to extract payment for the self pay portion at the time we were making the appointment for the procedure. Is this normal? I have good insurance that is covering over 2/3 of the cost. I have no problem with paying at least a portion of my share at the time the prep work and temporaries are put in (2 weeks from now). But why should I pay in full up front when it will be at least a month before the work is complete? And what redress would I have if there was some problem with the work done and I had already paid in full? Advice?
--------------------
While there is no reason a dental office should grant you credit ("just send me a bill after my insurance pays"), neither should YOU grant THEM credit ("pay us before we do the work.") Obtain a good-faith estimate of your non-insured charges and pay that as each procedure is completed. Any difference (to your benefit, or the dentist's) should be paid immediately after insurance pays. I am an office manager in a dental practice. It is our policy to collect an *estimated* patient portion at time of service. If I over collect, payment is refunded within two business days of insurance payment. I expect the same if the patient owes us.

How much do cavity filling/root canals cost in Bristol, CT?

I'm an international student and I will move to Bristol, CT really really soon. I think, I might need cavity filling, or worse root canals for my mandibular second premolar. Do you know, where to find a good & affordable dentist in/near Bristol, CT? Can an international student has dental insurance? Which one do you recommend? Real answers from real dentists are very much welcome!
--------------------
You are going to have two canals in that tooth. I would recommend Delta Dental insurance. An international student can get it. Almost all the dentists are good, affordable is another matter. Get it fixed as soon as you can. The sooner the better. I hope I have been helpful.

Over the years I have had more breathing and neck problems, I cant eat very much and My face and ears always burn, sting and hurt. Over the past year my husband and son have said to my a million times that I wake up at night gasping for air and most of the time I dont wake up until I cant get any air! It's the scarest thing i've ever been through. My doctor prescibed sleeping pills to help me sleep but Im scared to take them anymore that i wont wake up and I will suffcate in my sleep. When I move my neck and head certin ways I cant get as much air sometimes none! Im a hairdresser and have always thought the pain in my neck was from my job, But Im in so much pain and hoping Im not crazy . Any ideas??

I think that you may want to consult an ENT physician to verify that it is truly musculosketal vs sleep apnea. He can also diagnosis TMJ as well. Good Luck
