Talking Dental Hygienist Secret questions?

an you please answer these question for me 1@ why dental hygienist are hated by dentist and said they are over paid? 2@ why DH are not getting overtime hours or even full time? 3@ why DH does not have benefit, insurance.sick days and other things? 4@ why DH does not ask for cash money since most of them get part-time work? 5@why DH have to work for private dentists.are not there any public hospitals.are not DH in demand? 6@ can really a dental assistance do the DH job? if that is true.why the dentist is wasting money on DH? 7@why most dentists don't admit that they need hygienist.I mean if I'm a dentist and I don't hire A hygienes than I have to do their work and I will not have time to do root canal,molar.braces.filing and other things.what kind of business is that and don't you think that dental assistance is not licensed to do H\DH works, you can be sued for that and have a suspended license. Finally: I'm a male who is trying to be DH.I think DH should be treated equally,I feel like they are discriminated and used by man's power,so all Dh Have to develop some sort of strategy.Like a union or something that protects them from dentist.I may do that in the future if I became One..I try to lead women to path of success.this is just a personal opinion.no OFFEND TO ANY DENTIST OR ORTHODONTIC WHATSOEVER AND PLEASE KINDLY ANSWER MY QUESTIONS.
--------------------
Being a dental hygienist is very much like being a nurse. You must work under a doctor's supervision. However, there are no hygienist unions. There are professional organizations such as the ADHA who lobby for changes in the Dental Law and such things. Your questions: Dentists don't hate hygienist. Every dentist I have worked for has appreciated having a hygienist to do thier cleanings. Hygienists often work full time, although many dentists don't work a 40 hour work week. Full Time Hygienists do get full time benefits. My company provieds health insurance, dental insurance, sick days, personal days, vacation days and an optional 401 K. I dont understand cash money? Hospitals employ dental hygienists if they have a dental clinic. No an assistant can not by law clean teeth If a dentist doesnt want a hygienist, he or she probably doesnt have the client load to support one. Why not be a DH if you are male? We aren't discriminated against truely! We choose to be a hygienist, not a dentist. YOu need alot more schooling and$$$ to be a dentist. If I wanted equality with a dentist, I would have gone to dental school. In 25 years Ive always been respected and treated fairly by the professionals that have hired me. I would recommend that you look into some dental hygiene programs. They will provide you with all the info you need before chosing this career path.

Is there a good way to restore lost gum line?

I have recently been doing some 'at home' dental work on myself, and scraped away a good 5 years of plauqe. Well, underneath all the plauqe is nothingness, where gum used to be, and I'd like to get it back so that I can have a full healthy smile. However, I lack insurance and the money to see a dentist. Is there any way I can get my gum line back without spending a lot of money? Is it even possible to regrow gum line?
--------------------
No, there is no way to regrow or restore a receded gum line. Options that an orthodontist could discuss with you would be to cover the exposed roots with porcelain, which would make it look better and reduce root sensitivity. More aggressive option would be gingival transplants, but these are less predictable. As always, discuss these and any questions with your physician. Most public health systems include some measure of basic dental care, so check your local services.

How long does it take to get a crown?

I busted my tooth about six months ago, and had a permanent filling put in, but my dentist said I would need a crown within the year. I was going to get it done around that time, but my insurance ran out, so I had to wait until July. My appointment is next Tuesday. What will happen then and will I be able to do things later in the day(app at 10am)? I do recover from dental procedures very easily and have no pain after fillings or an extraction.
--------------------
They are going to take an impression, remove the filling, reshape the tooth (shave it into a nub) then they will take another impression, they will send that impression to a dental lab where a crown will be fabricated. It takes 2-3 weeks to get a crown back from the lab. But until then they will make you a temporary acyrlic crown right there in the office to wear until the perminant one comes in. You can go back to doing what ever you were gonna do that day as soon as the anestheic wears off (about an hour or so)

How much is the Public Option going to cost an individual ?

And how much is it going to cost a family? What is the deductible going to be? Is it going to cover dental? Will it cover prescriptions? Will it cover wheel chairs? Extended stay in Nursing homes? In House Nursing? How much is the fine person for not having health insurance? How much is the fine per household? How much is the fine for employers? Thanks...I can not find the answers to these questions anywhere and I thought that seeing how everyone here is so ready to just on the boat with this Public Option you would have the answers....
--------------------
For those people that already have insurance the public option would save them money. I was in Canada when they changed from a system similar to the one we have here to single payer. The first change was that I received a few hundred extra dollars in my pay stub as the employer no longer paid for my medical. I received better medical and felt better knowing some of the money I paid went to help poor children instead of wealthy insurance companies. The current bill is for the insurance companies and not for the public!

try going to Comfort Dental Orthodontics. You can use your insurance there, and their prices are much lower than most other places, and you get great service. They have a credit card type account that you can use, or you can pay cash. Usually, their costs are around half of normal places. Good luck!

Can I legally force my ex to stop providing health insurance for my child?

When we separated, my ex was ordered by the courts to provide health insurance for my daughter (now 14). However, his health insurance has changed and for the past year my daughter has had really terrible insurance that does not cover anything dental and pretty much anything more than a yearly physical. We recently found out that my daughter has a small hole in her heart and is going to need surgery soon to close/fix it. My insurance will cover pretty much EVERYTHING that will be billed and it also includes dental! My ex refuses to give up the fact that he has her covered and will not just adjust the court order so that he doesn't have to have it for her. I have explained to him that it will save him money and that she is in desperate need of dental exams and a visit to the orthodontist. Is there any way I can legally force him to give this up? I feel that this is neglect because my daughter cannot get the health care that she needs because I can't afford what his insurance will not cover! I am not sure who I should approach about this problem. Should I just contact a lawyer?

How much is your fertility drugs/ fertility consultant fees from Kaiser Permanante?

I have insurance threw Kaiser and have the 2,700 deductable plan. I pay 109 every month for health and dental. I was wondering if anyone else has the same plan and is currently going through fertility treatment and how much they are paying. I will be seeking fertility treatment soon and would like to know the cost ahead of time. Thanks!
--------------------
Wow you must have Kaiser through your work? I have Kaiser through an "individual" rather than "work" plan and they told me they don't cover fertility treatments in their individual plans. =( So I pay out of pocket. Meds for one month = $500, ultrasounds $150, insemination $300. Your cost will obviously be less since they are covering you. Invitro is in the thousands, but we haven't gotten there yet. EDIT -- I forgot to say that because they did not cover infertility treatments in the "individual plan," they refused to let me use their infertility services even though I was willing to pay them out of pocket -- some liability issue or something. Their infertility services are only for people that are covered by the infertility insurance. So I had to go out of the Kaiser system for my infertility treatments. I live in Los Angeles if that makes any difference -- maybe Kaiser is different where you live.

Dental procedures at Navy boot camp ?

I really want to join the navy reserves, but I have some serious dental problems. Even though they don't check your dental until boot camp, I'm afraid of being rejected for having serious issues. I have a cleft palate, and six years ago I lost four teeth after a facial reconstructive surgery. My insurance won't pay for a prosthodontist so I couldn't afford to have them replaced. Now I'm having problems with other teeth because of it and I need them pulled and replaced as well. This is all terribly expansive, and would put me into major debt. Otherwise, I'm young and in excellent health. I know the Navy does dental procedures, but this is pretty involved. If anyone has any experience with navy medical or recruiting issues I would really appreciate some feedback.
--------------------
Well actually, they check your teeth at MEPS. The standard is, do you have enough teeth, to be able to eat and chew food. Believe it or not, most recruits, have severe dental problems. If you just have 4 teeth missing, that's not a problem. If your cleft palate has been repaired, then your ok. If it has not been surgically repaired, then that is a disqualify for enlistment. The military doesn't pull teeth, unless it is absolutely no other choice. They will do a root canal and place a crown on them.

Dental hygiene students can do free cleaning on me?

I recently got dental x-rays done since my gums bleed every time i brush. Dentist said I need to get deep cleaning done. Since I have no insurance, he said it will cost $500!! which is ridiculous, I am a college student, I cant afford this. My college has no dental hygiene program, however my friend told me I could try to get free cleaning done by dental hygiene students. Can they do it for FREE? do i have to be a student at their college or not? please let me know.
--------------------
I know that this answer is correct since I teach at a dental hygiene college. Many of the students are so desperate for patients that they will pay the fee for the patient. "Deep cleaning" or periodontal patients are in great demand for these students to meet their requirements. There is one set fee for all cleanings, so it doesn't matter how many appointments you need for cleaning. One word of warning though -- you will need many, many appointments to get this cleaning done. While it would be 4 or 5 appointments at the dentist's office, this can easily be 10 appointments by a student. If you have the time, go for it.

Does BlueCross BlueShield PPO cover any part of an oral surgery?

My dental coverage only covers 80% of an oral surgery, will a bluecross blue shield PPO health insurance plan cover any of the rest? Or do you know if any health insurance plans cover some of a oral surgery? Thanks:)

Sometimes, depending on the plan, if you need IV sedation in a hospital for the surgery, the medical coverage will pick up the coverage for the anesthesiologist.

Cost of Dental Work; Is This a Ripoff?

Today I went to a dentist I found on a list of providers from my insurance carrier because I felt as though I had broken a tooth and I also know that I need work done. The dentist told me that although I have beautiful teeth, I need extensive work and would need to be referred to her associates who are not in my plan (endo and perio doctors) for some perio work and several root canals and crowns I would need. I asked for a ball park figure of what this would cost as I was prepared to pay it. She said with the insurance coverage (which she first said that my insurance company may or may not pay), it would cost close to $4,000.00. After a small gasp, I said "ok". I was then given a dental plan, which looked extremely extensive (19 entries listed) with a total cost of $5,800.00 at the bottom of the list a place and a place for my signature as "Authorizing Services". Then, I found out that this did not even include the perio surgery. Am I being ripped off?

Urgent Dental Care Needed & No Inurance. Please Help!?

My boyfriend has 4 impacted wisdom teeth that have been pushing on the rest of his teeth for about a year now. Last night one of his molars cracked in half to expose the root of the tooth. It is hurting him bad enough that he is getting physically ill from it. We have been using dental creams and the like on his gums to relieve the pain since we do not have insurance at this time or any extra money to be able to afford the surgery. Does anyone know where we can get an inexpensive help?? Ideally all 4 of his wisdom teeth need to be removed and the now broken tooth. All of the insurance providers I have looked at will not cover the surgery if we sign up immediately we have to wait a year. Please Help! We are in Oklahoma.
--------------------
You should call a dental college in your area. Usually, the general public can make appointments to see dental students, who are going to school to become dentists or dental hygienists. The services they provide are at a significantly reduced price. Check out the U of O website: http://gradschool.about.com/gi/dynamic/o… In the meantime for pain, give your BF 1000 mg of advil or tylenol every 4 hours. That would be 4 200 mg pills (check the bottle). This will significantly help with the pain.

Lack of Dental Hygienist Benefits?

I am starting to take the steps to educate myself to become a dental hygienist. As I was reading some answers to various DH posts I noticed one that mentioned the lack of benefits dent. hyg. have. For the most part I am so intrigued by the field of dentistry and orthodontics as I have had this feeling for years but it did make me think for a split second. They mentioned not having sick time, insurance, retirement, etc..to have a good support system if kids are sick..I mean right now that doesn't worry me so much as I am in my 20s and don't have kids. I wonder does it just depend on the dentist you find to work for? Seems that was the only post I saw mention it.. On a side note- I love orthodontics! Are dental hygienists trained to be able to work in those specialty offices or is it only dental offices? Do most orthos only hire dental assistants and not hygienists? Thanks :))
--------------------
1. The benefits offered at any job varies with the office that you choose. So, shop around. 2. Most likely you are NOT going to get benefits like insurance, retirement, etc. at a part-time position. 3. Any full-time position is legally required to offer you sick time, insurance, retirement, etc.. as a benefit package. 4. However, the amount of the sick time and paid time off increases with the length of employment. 5. Most of the jobs do not allow sick days for the first 3 to 6 months of employment (i.e., during the probation period). Working at an ORTHODONTIC PRACTICE can be a benefit because : 6. The pay will be higher because the practice itself will be making more money than an ordinary office :) 7. The cleaning will be easier than doing conventional adult prophy and / or scaling and root planing ("deep cleaning"). So, it won't be too hard on your hands. 8. It will be pleasant, provided you like working with kids / children. Good luck with your job search !!

How much is corrective jaw surgery cost? (Underbite)?

I don't have severe case but you can definitely notice my jaw is irregular. I'm a chronic mouth breather and that's probably the cause. I have insurance from work(regeance preferred), the work also gives me separate dental which is different insurance company. What's the price range for the surgery if the insurance doesn't cover it.
--------------------
You have 3 options. The first is a very involved surgery where they literally remove the lower jaw and move it forward. It involves several doctors and a dentist to create a new bite. This is a very major surgery and, thus, quite expensive. I cannot give you a price range for this. There are 2 options that are much easier, with just 5-7 days downtime, and far cheaper. The first is a sliding Genioplasty. This is where the doctor saws off a small part of your lower jaw and moves it forward, securing it with titanium screws. You could also consider a chin implant (which I regret not getting). This will give quite dramatic results, but may not look as natural as the other methods. These 2 options will both total approx. $2500-$4,000, depending on where you live and your doctor. Insurance will probably not pay for any of these procedures b/c they'll consider it elective cosmetic surgery.

help...need pregnancy insurance, college student?

I need some opinions or someone who knos from personal experience! I am a college student, 20 years old, and I am about 7weeks pregnant. My dad has me under his BCBSNC insurance (but it does not cover anything maternity or prenatal visits!!!) My dad wont allow that to his insurance policy. But i am covered in regualr doc checkups er visits, dental and some others because i am listed under his policy (me and my brothers). So the lady that does insurance at OBGYN told me that I would probably be eligiable for medicaid. Like I said, I am 20 years old, in college, live in a dormitory on campus, i have proof of identifcation, residence, I have a part time job and make 7.75/hr, i have bank statements, and can provide proof of employment as well as SS card and BirthCert.as well as proof of pregnancy! I just want the *Pregnancy medicaid*(the medicaid that is just strictly for maternal visits and prenatal care)... Will i still be able to qualify is my question?! i have no idea, I called the social services today and they never answered for 3hrs...so im trying to get an idea of what to expect. im a lil worried. i need this pregnancy medicaid to go to appointments....honestly i can not afford 700 dollars everytime i go.

Tricare Emergency Dental?

Ok so my wife got her tooth cut in half by a skateboard flying over a bouncy house while supervising and i just found out like many people that dental isn't covered in tricare its a separate program, i think her nerve is exposed and i don't want to spend 2 grand to get it fixed without insurance, they told me it would be a month before we are covered, does regular tricare cover emergency dental until our regular dental goes through? obviously we don't get paid enough to cover all this ourselves, but i was never told anything about separate dental. Thanks guys =)
--------------------
you should have gone immediately to the ER. Trcicare would have covered that. now since you have waited, they may not. Tricare covers a very limited amount of certain dental issues.

Dental Crowning to deal with Bruxism?

Hi guys! I have an issue with bruxism. I grind my teeth at night and my teeth are worn own, especially my bottom front row. My cousin thinks it's no big deal and that it's not noticeable.. BUT I NOTICE IT!! I have really good medical insurance through my employer and I want to know if anyone here has dental crowns. I've looked online and it's all advertising for dentists. How do you like them? Do they have that movie star look? How did the procedure go? How is day to day living with them and most importantly, how much did it cost you? Thank you for your answers!!
--------------------
Crowns normally cost around $850 more or less. If you grind your teeth, the first thing you should look into is a night guard. You can stop wearing down your teeth. Then after that you can look into crowns. :) *I noticed you said Medical Insurance it is Dental Insurance that you need. Not sure if you have it or not.

How to find a good dental plan?

I'm in Arizona and I don't have health insurance including dental. I work part-time so I can't get any benefits from my job. To be honest, I'm so confused by it all. How does someone get dental insurance for themselves? Are there any important things I should be looking out for? Any websites with thorough information. If I need braces, am i looking at a more expensive dental plan?
--------------------
You have four options with dental. 1. Visit a local dental school. You can get many procedures done for a reduced price if you're willing to let them practice on you. 2. Insurance - Depending upon the policy: cost $30-$60 per month. You pay a $50 deductible first, they have an annual maximum that they'll pay per year of $750 - $1500, they have a waiting period up to 18 months for major work and then you're paying 50% of the charges. Example - average cost for a root canal in my area is $829. With insurance you pay $414 after paying 18 months of premium (around $800 or $900). Advantage - you can use any dentist with most plans. 3. Discount plans - Cost - $5-$12 per month. No deductible, no annual maximum and no waiting periods. Also, hardly any dentists will accept the plan and when they do you MIGHT get a 10% discount, which is about the same discount you can get by paying cash. Example - average cost for a root canal in my area is $829. With discount plans you pay around $746. Be very wary of these plans because most are scams. The people that sell these plans have little or no knowledge about health & dental insurance and do not need a license to sell them. The plans are not regulated by the state so you have no recourse when you have problems. Some states are starting to ban these plans from being sold. One state because they couldn't find any doctors and only one dentist (who was on probation for unlawful activities). Here is an informative link http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/wes… concerning these plans. 4. Fee for Service discount plans - Cost $7-$15 per month. No deductible, no annual maximum and no waiting periods. Many dentist will accept the plan (check providers first before signing up with any plan). When you use the plan there is a set fee that the dentist will charge you. Example - average cost for a root canal in my area is $829. With fee for service plans you pay as little as $404. I'm an insurance agent and my personal plan is the fee for service plan. I got mine here http://www.dpbrokers.com/default.aspx?lo… specifically the Aetna Dental Access plan but which one you get depends upon your area and comparing the fee schedule to find the best for what you need covered.
