Question on orthodontics dental insurance?

I plan on getting Invisilign instead of braces due to my age. (34) My question is regarding the dental orthodontics insurance my company has, $1500, its separate from my regular dental limit. So when I plan to get the invisilign do they take the whole $1500 off of what I would then owe them right away (subtract from my total balance)? or is it taken out a little at a time?

Talk to your orthodontist and insurance company. My daughter's orthodontist charged 1/2 up front and the rest in monthly payments. I don't remember how the insurance paid. Your orthodontist will probably be willing to work with you.

I haven't been to a dentist in 6 years due to lack of insurance; can you please give me some dental advice?

1) I brush 2-5 times a day, floss 5 times a month, and use listering 2-3 times a week. Is there anything else I should be doing aside from this to maintain the health of my teeth? 2) I have looked pretty extensively for dental insurance. My job does not offer it, I can not get on state insurance, and all I can find in dental discount plans. Where do I find dental insurance? About how much does it run? Does it take a while to go into effect? Are the dental discount plans worthwhile, or are they a gimmick? 3) I get toothaches that hurt it places where I had cavities as a child. When it happens it hurts to floss or chew, are these new cavities? 4) How much does it cost w/out insuracne to get cavities filled? To get a check up? To get my teeth cleaned? 5) Whenever I drink, it hurts to chew the next day, is this normal? 6) I'm 23, my wisdom teeth haven't come in yet, sometimes its tender and hurts back there, is this normal? Any help is appreciated. Answer all or 1. Thank you!
--------------------
1) Yes there is more you can do, floss every single day if possible. It will definitely help. Also brush for at least 2 minutes each time you brush ( 1min on top and 1 min on bottom). Try to brush every time you eat and if brushing isn't possible at least swish water around your mouth to rinse it out. Try to go to the dentist EVERY 6 months for a cleaning. Most dental offices will offer new patient specials for patients without insurance. You can get x-rays, an exam, and cleaning for $99.00 or LESS! By getting your teeth cleaned every 6 months, it will prevent more seriously and expensive problems (like cavities). 2) Most colleges that have dental schooling will offer services from their dental students that are ready to graduate. These services are available to everyone and are going to be much lower in price than any dental office. The dental discount plans ARE A WASTE OF MONEY!! You can only use them at participating dental offices and almost NO dentist's accept them. I suggest if you do find a discount plan, call local dental offices in your area and ask if they accept that plan - I bet they wont. Another option is CARE CREDIT. It is a dental credit card that offers up to 12 months with zero interest. You can apply online. 3) Anytime you are having pain it is not a good sign. Is the area sensitive to hot or cold? If so, you will most likely need a root canal to stop the pain (or you could have the tooth pulled). You may need new fillings or its possible you may have sensitive teeth. You really need to have it looked at. Its impossible to tell what's going on without an x-ray. If it is just a small cavity it will be WAY cheaper to fill now than if you let it go and wind up needing a root canal. We are talking a difference of about 80 bucks to fill and over 1,300 for a root canal and crown. 4) Depending on the tooth and how big the filling is, the prices will vary. Silver fillings are much cheaper than white ones and they do just fine. Many dental offices say that silver does not last as long or they will tell you that there is mercury in silver. Trust me, silver is fine and works just as well. Dental offices just get more money from the white ones and they do look nicer. I have silver in my mouth and my husband is a dentist. There is NOT enough mercury in them to cause ANY harm. Silver fillings will run you between $80 and $150. White ones will run you between $120 and $250 (give or take). Like I said before, most dental offices run new patient specials for cleaning, exams, and x-rays for about $99 or less. This is an awesome deal considering a cleaning is usually around $80.00 and x-rays are about $120.00 and an exam is about $65.00. If they take a full mouth of x-rays those are good for 5 years and the little x-rays they take (bitewings) are good for a year. The thing that concerns me is that you have not had a cleaning in 6 years. You may need a "deep cleaning" or a "scaling" to get all the bacteria and plaque that has built up under your gums over the years. That type of cleaning WILL NOT be covered in any special. You would still be able to get the x-rays and exam though for the cheaper price and get a quote on how much more a deeper cleaning will cost you. A good way to tell if you need a deep cleaning is to floss and brush- if your gums are bleeding, sore, or swollen then you probably do. 5) Nope, that's not normal. You do need x-rays. 6) Yes. I am also 23 and my wisdom teeth are still under the surface. Actually, my wisdom teeth are impacted =( and it sounds like yours are too. You will probably need to have them removed and so do I! The fact that they are impacted is most likely what is causing the pain you feel. I hope that this helps. If you have other questions, email me at PhilandLola@yahoo.com =).

I have new dental insurance, what does this mean?

It says that the (annual maximum payment plan) is $2000. Does this mean that my insurance will pay up to $2000, or does it mean that $2000 is the maximum I will have to pay a year for services? The dental insurance is called "SelectHealth Dental" I live in Utah.
--------------------
Hi, I'm a Claims Analyst at a dental office in the Bay Area of California, and I'd be more than happy to help you understand your dental insurance. Annual Maximum is the amount of money your insurance will pay AT MOST for procedures in that year. That means let's say you did a cleaning for $300, 2 fillings for $500, and a root canal for $1,100, they will pay all of this work just as long as it doesn't go over $2,000. Since this totals up to be $1,900, more than likely they will pay for it They don't, HOWEVER, pay for procedures in full. Each treatment is categorized in 3 different "tiers": 1) Diagnostic/Preventative (Which are Cleanings, Emergency treatments, fluoride, consultations, office observation, etc) 2) Basic (Fillings, Deep Cleanings, Root Canals, etc) 3) Major (Crowns, Bridges, Restorative work, etc) Many insurance policies vary in the amount thats covered, but typically general dental insurances cover 100% for Preventative, 80% for Basic, and 50% for Major. Since the cleaning is $300, we'll assume your insurance paid 100%. ($300) Since the fillings were $500, we'll assume your insurance paid 80%. ($400) Since the root canal was $1,100, we'll assume your insurance paid 80% ($880) Add the total and it's $1,580.00. That means your $2,000 maximum after all this dental work is done will only be $420.00 remaining on your plan. Anything not paid by the insurance is patient responsibility. This is considered a "Co pay." It is up to the dental office to uphold your co-pay and up to the patient to pay it. If you do not pay your co pay the dental office can file several referrals to various collection agencies and perhaps take legal action to the highest extent under jurisdiction. Typically, annual maximums do not roll over for years. It's basically a "use it or lose it" policy. Once the renewal date comes up, your insurance policy will reset to $2,000 (if not altered to higher or lower maximums). If you do anything over $2,000 for that same year you will have reached your maximum, therefore any additional work after the $2,000 cap you will assume all fiscal responsibility for the dental work. In essence you will not be covered for additional work after you have maxed out. Speak to your employer about getting in contract insurance policies and find dental offices that are in contract with your insurance. In-contract is beneficial for patients who wish to see lower "out of pocket" co pays. Though you may pay less for co pays and procedure, this comes at the expense of your paycheck as you will have to pay higher premiums for it. Be careful of what your plan DOES and DOES NOT cover. Some insurance plans do not cover Posterior (back teeth, aka molars) composite (commonly known as white or teeth colored fillings) fillings. Call your insurance company and request a breakdown of benefits so you know how much is remaining in your annual maximum and what kinds of procedures are you eligible for. Sometimes insurance plans also have Ortho coverage, ortho coverage maximum is SEPARATE from DENTAL maximum. However most ortho coverage is for dependents or spouses on the plan, many times not for the subscriber itself. Definitely call and get a breakdown of that Other than that I really do hope this helped you and educated you a little bit more about the world of insurance :) send me an email anytime if you have any questions regarding dental health or insurance policies as it is my job to help our patients at our office and also patients of anywhere else! Take care

What company can I use to purchase private dental insurance in Seattle, WA?

which dental company can I use to purchase affordable dental care privately, not through an employee? For anyone age 18 and over and would cover basic dental visits and surgery such as wisdom teeth removal in Seattle, WA thanks.
--------------------
Nearly all dental plans advertised on the Internet are discount plans, not insurance. Even with a discount plan, a wisdom tooth extraction will still cost several hundred dollars. If you need actual insurance, be very careful to select an insurance policy, not a discount plan. Anything described as an "insurance alternative" or a "discount plan" is not insurance. Most things described as dental plan" are also discount plans, not insurance.

I have a bite guard and had to pay for it. The cost is alot but if you don't lose it should last forever. Please help me with dental insurance?

I would like to get dental insurance but I don't know anything about it. What are the major insurance companies? Which are the best? I have basically healthy teeth and I would just need a filling or two and regular cleanings. Do you have to be seen in person and have a dental exam in order to get insurance? Is this really a good idea for someone with healthy teeth? Am I going to save money by getting the insurance, or would it be nearly equal to the cost of maintaining my teeth without it?

Whats an elimination period in insurance, particularly how might it work in dental insurance?

I'm taking another jab at this for a good answer, prefer answers from insurance professionals but all answers welcome
--------------------
An elimination period is like a time-period deductible...your coverage will not be in effect until after the elimination period ends. This prevents someone with no insurance who knows they have a cavity from getting dental insurance right before they have a dentists appointment...in insurnance lingo it prevents "moral hazard" or "adverse selection".

How does dental insurance work?

Ok, so ive never had insurance before... Say I go in for a root canal, and my insurance only covers 50%, am i billed for the remainder or do I pay on the spot?
--------------------
If there is 50% copay of the total cost, you pay at least half of it, provided the root canal visit requires at least two visits. The following article will explain the procedure step by step : http://www.associatedcontent.com/article… You pay off the rest of the amount the day of the final visit. You can also talk to the Endodontist beforehand if you want to set up a payment plan....Some [( not all :) ] of the dentists do work with you.

What is agood dental insurance to get w/o getting it through work?

Kinda like a rider insurance you pay for yourself.
--------------------
As a dentist, I know that this question is impossible to answer. Delta is wonderful to work with as a company, but they must sell at least a hundred different plans. There are many other companies that sell dental insurance such as Aetna, MetLife, and several others, but they all sell many different products. How happy YOU are depends on which plan you buy. Most of the time, the only way to get really good dental coverage is through your employer. When you buy dental insurance as an individual, there are deductibles and co-pays and annual maximums that you need to analyze in order to figure out when and if you will actually save money by having insurance coverage. Some of the premiums I have seen make it almost impossible to realize any positive cash flow from the related policy. I mean, at $60 a month with $100 deductible and $1,000 annual maximum, you will have to take $820 out of your own pocket before you realize one penny of "profit" or net gain from your dental insurance. Then you have to calculate the effect of co-payements. Check the figures and do the math yourself. Be cautious about buying or choosing a plan where you do not have any choice about the dentist you can see, because you just might not like the dentist(s) listed on the plan and then you are stuck for a year until you can get out of it. Be cautious about buying a so-called "dental discount plan," often mentioned on Yahoo!, since they also have restrictive lists and they really are not dental insurance at all. Just be careful and understand what you are buying. For many people who just can't get good dental insurance, a regular savings plan sort of like a Christmas Club with $20-25 a month deposited into a dedicated account will pay off when you examine the return over a lifetime. You may run way over your savings at first, but once you get your mouth straightened out, your annual expenses should not be more than a couple hundred dollars most of the time.

Getting a second opinion and using dental insurance?

I was recently told I need a root canal on a tooth that looks fine and does not hurt. How do I get a second opinion - will insurance cover another exam?
--------------------
Call your insurance company and ask them. Odds are they won't cover a second opinion. Maybe you can ask your dentist to show you your x-ray and have him explain in detail why you need one. Just because a tooth may look fine to you, doesn't mean that it's healthy or won't hurt like heck later on.

If you buy dental insurance they will most likely have you wait a while before any major dental work can be done, thus wasting time and money. The other option for getting a break on the dental cost sooner is to get a plan with NO waiting periods. Try one of the plans below.
