major tooth problem?

Ok, this is scary. I was just eating when my filling came out. Within 5 min the portion of my gums under that tooth pushed it's way up through the whole in my tooth where the filling was. It has swollen the size of a tooth itself. So now I have a tooth with a large whole in the center and swollen gums up through the whole... all this and my dental insurance doesn't kick in for 2 weeks!!! Help, what do I do???
--------------------
The body has a way of...filling in open spaces, that's what your gum is doing. Try and floss the gum down, or up depending on if its a top or bottom tooth, this will keep the gum at a healthier level. The dentist may cut some of that swollen gum away when he/she preps the tooth so it will probably be sore afterwards. Make an appointment for the day the insurance kicks in.

Wisdom teeth question.?

Does anyone know how much it cost to have your wisdom teeth removed, without dental insurance??
--------------------
Go to the yellow pages and start calling dentist offices in your area. 1. They will give you prices all over the place. 2. Find out how long the wait is. Emergency surgery costs extra. 3. Different types of anesthesia have different prices. A shoot to kill the pain is cheaper than being put totally under.

help me out?

i have some tooth being filled by silver. now those tooths are breaking down into pieces day by day. currently i do not hold any dental insurance. it hurts really bad. any suggestion what should i do?

HELP! My teeth are becoming buck at 48 yrs old!?

A very strange phenomena is happening to me! For the past few weeks I have this strange feeling/awareness of my teeth/bite. My upper and lower teeth have a strange sensation, like it is moving forward (similar to when I had braces on & the dentist was moving them in place). I noticed that my upper teeth seem to be beginning to plow into my upper lip! It feels like they are becoming buck. My teeth were not buck as a teenager, they were just crooked. 3 of my siblings had severely buck teeth & had teeth pulled. They used a palette expander on me because they told me that if they pulled 4 teeth I would have a pan face in my 50's which would make me look old. He gave me this horrible full mouth rubber exercise retainer which I hated and my teeth moved back somewhat crooked again. Any ideas what my teeth are doing now and why my bite is changing? I very concerned. Could it be due to a medical condition. I don't have dental insurance right now so can't run to the dentist.
--------------------
You did not mention anything about your back teeth. One dental phenomenon that could be causing this is called "posterior bite collapse." Usually this is what happens when you have had some back teeth removed, but not replaced. (I'm not talking about having teeth removed for braces, because that space is then closed.) You can also be grinding so much that you are causing the same thing. Your front teeth are not made to bear the weight of chewing without support of all of your back teeth and they start to "buck out" or flare in the anterior region. It would seem unlikely, but this could also be related to a new tongue habit. In a younger person, we would routinely look for a tongue thrust, but if you never had one, it would seem odd that you started doing this at age 48. The tongue is a MIGHTY force, though, when it comes to moving teeth. Consider any changes in habit that might be significant. If you can not find a dental cause, yes there are medical conditions that lead to expanding bone and the accompanying flaring of the teeth. Search on "acromegaly" and you will find all kinds of information on this hormonal condition that can lead to flaring of the teeth. I think this is the most common underlying condition, but I'm not an expert on this topic.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL+BRACES?

im in summer training for football but the issue has came up that my moms dental insurance will be renewed in a a couple months, and i dont know if i will be able to play football if i have braces so if anyone is able to gave an answer on if that would be possible I'd be very grateful *thanks in advance
--------------------
You can't play football while you have traditional braces. The brackets would tear up your cheeks and lips if you were hit in the mouth area. Perhaps with Invisalign you could. I would look into that form of treatment if it is suitable for your case.

dentist help... please help... please.?

i have a terrible cavity in my right molar. it has given me so much pain that i can't even concentrate in school. my family has no dental insurance and my dad owes just about every dentist in my town so thats out of the question does anybody know what i can do? perhaps a special program that teens can go through? thank you so much for any help.
--------------------
if you can get your hand on touch and go from the pharmacy , take a tiny bit of cotton and soak it in the touch and go anf then place it in the cavity. if not, do you have cloves ( a spice) at home? Crush it and place in the cavity. If this is also not available, get some chorhexidine mouthwash and use it as a mouth wash or spray it into the cavity. More importantly you need to see a dentist, by the sounds of it need so treatment and there is really no quick fix to the problem. Pain killers will only work for the duration that ytou take the tablets.

TMJ & Night Mouth Guards- OTC?

I have tmj and it's pretty severe. (it gets really bad whenever i'm pregnant and im currently pregnant with my 3rd). ANyways I don't have dental insurance and I checked into getting a night guard for at home from walgreens or CVS.. but on all of the packages they all have warnings that say if you have TMJ don't use them? Why? Everyone keeps recommending I get one---
--------------------
You need the mouth guard specifically fitted for your mouth and your specific needs. This might shift your jaw into a position that will make it worse... I had/have TMJ, so I know what you are going through...it sucks....I would get an estimate from a specialist on what it would cost for appts. and such...see if that do a payment plan, which I think they do, mine did.

Going to the dentist..?

So I haven't been to the dentist in a while, due to the fact that I had strep throat last time I was scheduled to go. It's been about three years and I just haven't had the time to go. So now, my dad has gotten new dental insurance through his new job and my mom plans on taking me there. I have 3-4 cavities in my molars. What kind of pain should I be expecting from the fillings or possibly crowns?
--------------------
It's not really that bad. You will feel a bit of pain though. No matter what anyone says you will feel at least a bit of pain. It feels like a stick poking at your gums. It's not that bad. If you have really bad cavities though, thry might have to numb it by injecting medication into your gums. Don't worry about it, it feels like your average everyday needle only a bit less painful.

Cavity help!!!?

I don't understand. I brush every morning and every night. I use ACT Restoring mouthwash once a day like it says to. Eat some sweets but not ALOT. Get plenty of calcium. Why do I keep getting cavities?!?!? I don't have dental insurance and its getting rather expensive!
--------------------
Hi, I'm a dentist. It may be the WAY you are brushing. You can brush until you are blue in the face, but if you're not doing it properly, you're wasting your time. Also, I noticed you didn't mention flossing. If you're not flossing, you can brush brilliantly and still get cavities in between your teeth, as you cannot clean there except with proper, regular flossing. I encourage you to schedule an appointment with your dentist and/or hygienist to go over a detailed caries risk assessment (caries is the disease process of dental decay). If your dentist doesn't know what a caries risk assessment is, he/she may be an old-school dentist, not trained in this relatively new assessment technique. Your caries risk assessment will help explain your areas of risk, and you can use this knowledge to come up with an action plan to change your risk status. Good luck.

College Student needing Braces - Help!?

I am a 22 year old junior in college. I was hoping to wait until I graduate to get braces. But I recently went to the dentist for a cleaning and was shocked at what I was told. Due to the fact that my mouth is overcrowed I will contiune to get cavities. The dentist told me my options were to either come in and get my teeth cleaned every three monthes or change my diet completly. I have NO dental insurance so getting my teeth cleaned every three months is not an option. I have tried changing by diet, but there are so many foods I can't eat now. I'm sure there must be a program out there for college students. Please if anyone has any advice I would appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

Invisalign is a good braces alternative for a college student. They have financing options available.

Filling just fell out.?

I absoultely hate going to the dentist and I haven't been in 6 yrs now, I know it's terrible especially when i have dental insurance. Tonight I was eating something hard and sticky and my filling fell out. Its on my lower bottom molar and its on the side of the tooth. I was jsut wondering how long can that tooth stay exposed without any advirse affects happening? Thanks in advance for your answers.
--------------------
Yes, go to the dentist and get it filled right away. With a hole in the side of your tooth, food and bacteria will get in the nerve of your tooth and cause an infection. Your molar is also in a high impact area. You chew on it all the time, so you risk breaking off more of the tooth. You would also very likely develop decay if there isn't any right now (just a filling broke, right?). Your tooth, aside from causing you major pain from the infection, may get to the point where it's not fixable and have to be pulled. If it doesn't get to that point, you'd need a root canal and a crown. If you just get the tooth filled now, it will save you a lot of pain and money in the long run.

Help relieving toothache.?

I have a really bad toothache right now. I think I will be needing a root canal. About 4 month ago, my dentist said I needed a root canal. After he drilled through my tooth, he said I don't need one and just recovered it up. Ever since, my tooth has been very sensitive and I guess it started acting up now. I took total of 7 advils already. I took 2 at first, another 2, then 1. I went to sleep inbetween each 2 pills and I woke up with crazy pain. I tried taking 1 and it didnt help. I just recently took 3. I already went over the recommended pills within 24 hrs by 1. Any help? Also, if I go into a dentist as a new patient for emergency, should they be able to get to it right away? Also, is root canal an expensive procedure? No dental insurance.
--------------------
You need a dental plan with no waiting periods and no deductibles to save on your root canal and get out of pain immediately. A few suggestions below.

FILLING FELL OUT.. URGENT?

My tooth had a root canal performed a couple months back. Last night, it started hurting badllyyy. I noticed the filling wasn't even filling the tooth, and a large portion is missing. I didn't have a cap on, and I don't have dental insurance OR money. PLEASE.. I NEED HELP. THE PAIN IS HORRIBLE.
--------------------
I've lost about 8 teeth due to old fillings falling out and then the breakage that occurred after I didn't see a dentist fast enough. My teeth could not be saved because they had broken down too much or were too weak to perform any more work on them. I did have the option of getting a few root canals/crowns. I couldn't afford that so I just had them all pulled. I see dentists at a local dental college. Extractions there cost about $90 per tooth. I also have Medicaid which you may qualify for. They paid for most of my dental work. In the meantime, see your dentist, explain the situation and they may be able to give you a prescription for painkillers.

do i have an abscess?????

um i am 13 years old and i think i have an abcsess tooth. i have a small crater cavity in my bottom molar that i have filled with this drugstore product called Temparin temorary tooth filling. i have not had pain in the tooth. i have had the cavity for 5 years. but about 1 and a half years ago i got this little lump of gum. it didn't bother me in any way at all. but a couple months ago the bump filled up with whiteish yellowish goo and it hurt alittle. i took a qtip and pushed on it a little and the goo came out. i took an ibuprofin and it stopped hurting. in a week it had dissapeared completely. now it is back and every couple of months it fills,up hurts, drains and then dissapears. just so you know when it hurts it only hurts a little. my mom and i have no health or dental insurance and we don't have much money so i can't go to the dentist. i take good care of my teeth, i floss brush twice a day and use mouthwash, and liquid floride. please note, I HAVE NO MONEY FOR THE DENTIST!HELP
--------------------
As a dentist myself it sounds like you have an Abscess on your hands. An infected tooth, or abscess as they are called are extremely painful and will need antibiotic therapy. PLEASE see a Dentist or take a trip to your local ER as soon as possible as this CANNOT be fixed on its own and there are NO home remedies that will cure this tooth, you need a dental professional immediately. Antibiotics and pain medication that the Doctor will prescribe will eventually help the tooth become less infected but once you stop antibiotics the infection WILL return and is usually much more painful the second time around. Infection from an abscess tooth can spread to the throat causing an airway obstruction and can spread to the heart and brain and cause very severe problems and sometimes fatal complications. PLEASE see a dentist in your area to discuss treatment as this can become extremely painful. Try taking Motrin (ibuprofen) for pain, this will help reduce swelling and will also help control pain. Also try using COLD compresses, do NOT use heat as this can cause the infection to worsen and spread and become more painful. Please see a dentist or ER physician ASAP. Good luck!

My Teeth Hurt Sooooooo Bad!!!!?

My teeth hurt sooooo bad. I never brush them. Is there anyway I can make brushing more fun? My mom has no dental insurance so i cant go to the dentist. I have many cavities. my teeth are kind of yellowy and crooked. i really wish I had pretty teeth. PLEASE HELP SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
--------------------
being a girl you should have a good set of teeth. it is your lack of awareness which lead to such a poor condition of your oral cavity. first of all you see a dentist ( professional help) as soon as possible. start brushing your teeth from today itself. use a colored, flavored toothpaste which will help to attract you towards brushing. brushing is the most important way of prevention of any oral problems. as you have worsened your condition with not maintaining your oral health, now you have to take professional help though your family don't have dental insurance. because proper teeth has got many advantages like helpful in proper digestion, personality development, confidence, social status. if you find any problem with all this you can contact me on Dr mitesh parekh, 9890468767, parekh1710@yahoo.co.in.

How can I convince my dad I need to worry about braces sooner rather then later...?

I am 17 years old and I really need braces. We have both dental and ortho. insurance. Now I realize that even with that braces are going to be very expsensive but we are lucky enough to have the insurance but what good does it do if we are not putting it to use? I also know that I am only on my parents dental insurance until I am 18 or 19 and I am pretty sure it covers treatment only if it is started before that. So that does not give us a lot of time to think about it. I at least want to go to a consoltation (arn't they usually free) with an orthodontist so that way we could at least have an idea of what kind of treatment and the cost we are looking at. Everything I have read online about cutting cost on braces says to start by going to the dentist/orthodontist and talking to them about your money problems and seeing what they can do about it. Now when I get a job I could help my parents pay for some of my braces but also think that I am going to have to pay for college, a car, gas for my car... Now eveyrtime I suggest it to my dad he just shruggs it off, like we have all of the time in the world to worry about it. Truth is we should have started worrying about it 10 or more years ago. The other day I said we should go to the regular densit for a cleaning (which is 100% covered by insurance) and he was like "why do you want to have your teeth picked at" "We can go get a cleaning after school is out" THATS 6 MONTHS AWAY. Thanks!!
--------------------
something like this" look dad we have the means and insurance to do it now and i don't want to start college with railroad tracks and besides none of the guy will ask me out and i'll be an old maid and have to live at home with you and mom cause i was too ugly for anyone to care about me" and then start crying

Advice on what to do with a hole in my molar?

Ok, so several months ago my old filling from my first molar broke off leaving me with a pretty good sized hole in it. My dentist said i needed to get a root canal or either get it extracted. With the dental insurance i had it was free for an extraction and about $1000 for a root canal. I was wanting to keep my tooth as im only 20 yrs old but didn't have the money for the root canal, unfortunately shortly after i lost my dental insurance. I still have the hole in my molar which causes me spontaneous moderate to severe pain. I can't get to the dentist for lack of money and insurance. Any advice on what to do would be good, i mean if i am able to get back onto my insurance should i just go ahead and have it extracted? With the pain, I've gotten the point where im seriously considering it and i don't want it getting worse or causing serious health problems. Also is it safe to buy and use an over the counter temporary filling after the hole has been exposed for months now, i don't want to lock any bacteria in or anything, or would the temp. filling even help at this point
--------------------
The over the counter filling could help with temporary comfort until you decide what you want to do with your molar. It will not seal in bacteria, but if you are not careful when you put it in, it could provide a place for food to get stuck in, which could make the problem worse. You know you have to get something done, if you can't afford the root canal, you need to get it extracted as soon as you can. You run the risk of the abscess spreading to other major organs in your body such as your brain. It also weakens your immune system, and the bacteria could start eating away at your jaw bone or neighboring teeth if you leave it untreated.

California Child Support. What expenses are covered?

I've done the income calculation and it says I should be paying close to $500 per month for child support to my ex. I'm paying $650 based on court order over 10 years ago, when my income was slightly higher. With that aside, I'm okay paying the $650 but exactly what expenses are being covered and which ones don't need to be? on top of the $650 I'm paying the following: 1. 50% Medical Insurance (she's paying all of the the Dental Insurance $24) 2. 50% Sports activities 3. 50% Braces 4. 50% Medical copay expenses outside of health insurance. She wants me to pay extra for: 1. 50% of school lunch money 2. 50% of clothing (I buy him clothes here and there as well) 3. 50% of the Dental Insurance. So again does anyone know if I'm over paying or if I should be paying 50% of the additions she wants me to pay?
--------------------
I'm in So-Cal. And, I've been through a divorce with kids too. If you really think your income has decreased since your last child support order, then you may want to consider requesting a reduction in the child support. But, if her income has decreased too, that may have an effect. The first child is always 25% of the father's income and then they put the mom's income in the disso-master. And then of course, it's based on the percentage of time each parent has with the child. My take on those 3 extra items the ex is asking for, I'd say "no" to the lunch money and clothes. That's what the child support is for. And the dental insurance - probably. So, if you really think that you are going to get it lowered, then try for it. You might be able to get some free help. I know my court has a "Family Court Facilitator". This person only deals with child support issues and it's free advise and free forms that need to be completed and filed. You'd pay the filing and serving of the papers, but at least you won't need a lawyer. See if your court has one of those and then make an appointment and discuss with that Facilitator. They probably can do your calcs for you and see if you have a motion to file. Good luck.

I know exactly how you feel i had over crowding and my teeth were pushing my top teeth out they looked like vampire fangs and the bottom was crooked. I was supposed to get braces when i was 13 but my parents always said it was too much. We went for a consultation and they thought it was doable because my dad knew the ortho. But she got sick and actually quit after i got my molding and xrays done. I was 18 when i went to the dentist that ive been seeing since i was 9 years old and he always ALWAYS brings up when am i getting braces i tell him its hard financially for my parents to afford them and he wants me to get them really bad cause its bad for the health of my other teeth if they are hiding behind one another and im more suceptible to root canals and cavities. Im not saying my teeth were hideous like a shark but there were 2 problem areas that always bugged me. It was on that list of "if u can change something about ur self what would it b" and finally the last straw broke when i went for my last cleaning and my dentist said "ur 18 now and in the professional world appearances will make a difference for u to get certain jobs and it will affect peoples opinions about u" what an *** i havent gone back to him since i probably will after i get my braces off tho) =) but now i have braces for about 9 months now and even though i need them 4 2 years and i want them off so bad it will b totally worth it. I say tell ur dad its something u need for ur dental health and keep bringing it up. Hope u get them <3

--------------------
Dental health is very important to whole body health. You're wise to want to take care of your teeth. Consultations in my area are typically free, even over years. We started taking my son to an ortho when he was about 6 at the suggestion of the dentist and we went back every year, never a charge, until my son got braces last summer, at 14. He was actually one of the last of his friends to get braces (most had them out right before high school started, his should come out right before 10th grade starts), but he has one friend who is 15.5 and just got them. In my area, the orthos take payments after the initial installation is covered, which will be in part covered by your insurance. Our payment is $200 a month over 2 years, we had $1000 insurance (I think, it changed each year and I think we just missed when we had $2000), and his braces are around $6000. (Braces are very expensive where we live.) Ask your insurance customer service how your otho insurance pays. Often the insurance covers 50% of the charge, up to the amount of the insurance. So if you have $1000 insurance, it would be fully used at $2000 of charges, sort of. But it works differently for monthly payments (at least ours does), like they divide the amount left to go to them by the number of payments or something like that, so it wouldn't necessarily pay the first full payments, but a part of each future payment. One hint to save, we had my son's panoramic xrays done by the dentist (they like to see them too) and the insurance covered them ($300), instead of using the ortho insurance. My son sees the dentist 3 - 4 times a year for cleaning, but other than that, he's never had a cavity, etc, so we have insurance money available. I've heard that in some areas the orthodontists customarily won't take payments, but ask your dentist for several names of good orthodontists and it's likely you will find one who will. Also, ask if there are any orthodontists with low prices in your area that are good. Make the appt for your regular dental visit and when you are there, ask the dentist about braces. Have them speak to your parent if it's important that you get braces soon, they might listen to the dentist. Call the ortho and ask how much a consultation costs and make an appt. Good luck!
