Have you considered a world without insurance?

50 years ago most people didn't have insurance. Imagine how much money goes to insurance. You pay for health, dental, life, mortgage, property, car, flood and whatever else. Then you might buy extended warranty insurance on your, fridge, washer, drier, home, car, tires,... How about just saving the money and becoming self insured. How many thousands of dollars would you have in 10 years just from not buying any insurance? Then there are the indirect costs such as the money your employer doesn't pay you because he contributes to your insurances (soon to be taxed and imputed income). And the costs of products you buy increased because all the employers that handle you goods pay their employees for insurance. Then some common sense. If you live in a flood prone area, don't expect your house replaced, build above the flood level. In earthquake or huricane areas, build a better house. I have heard many people say "it is OK, I have insurance" It is your choice to live there.

Are there any affordable (CHEAP!!) cosmetic dentists in San Antonio, TX ?

I need 12 crowns and braces after a dog biting accident and have Washington Delta Dental Insurance but it only pays $2000 max. I need a dentist that will give me a break on the prices. Thanks for the help, I REALLY appreciate it!!

Is this due to a wisdom tooth?

On the right lower back side of my gum it is extremely swollen. I am 20 and haven't cut my wisdom teeth yet. The pain got severe about 4 this morning and I went to the ER and the doctor gave me some antibiotics and pain medicine. It's not the last tooth, it's definitely the gum right behind the tooth. I don't have dental insurance and I'm hoping this goes away. Do you think it's from my wisdom tooth or something else?
--------------------
FYI, Wisdom teeth usually erupt between 17-24 years of age, so you probably are geting yours now.

Social Insurance Number?

I am 15 male and work at kumon.Their benefits includes a dental plan.I have already gave kumon my social insurance number.Does that mean when i go to the dentist, the cost of dental will be covered? Or do i have to tell the dentist that i have a dental plan at work.
--------------------
There is no such thing as a "Social Insurance Number". It is Social Security Number that you gave them. It has nothing to do with insurance it is so the Federal and State governments can see that you pay the proper amount of taxes. You have to ask them if you are covered by insurance, but if you did not fill out paper work, and especially considering your age, I do not think you have insurance through this job.

Average cost to repair tooth bonding?

I had bonding done on my top 4 teeth, 5 years ago, and over time pieces of it have chipped off. I would like to have it repaired, but I do not currently have dental insurance. Can any one give me a ballpark idea as to what it would cost to repair? I do not live near the dentist who originally did the work, otherwise I would ask him. thanks for any help - I live in the Boston, MA area...
--------------------
You are in a higher fee area. The bonds will cost $200 - $300 per tooth to be replaced. Remember the life span is around 5 years. Ask your dentist about a longer lasting solution, porcelain veneers. Good luck.

How much would this cost??

I apparently have to get a tooth extracted plus a bridge for the gap it will create. Im just scared to think how much this will all cost. I have dental insurance but i just want an idea. anyone know?
--------------------
Ive never had a bridge but my last two tooth extractions before insurance were about $300 I belive I only had to pay $50

wow. i have had an abcess for 8 years. started on the right side now a blister has formed on the left side.?

no dental insurance. that is why i have not gone to dentist. do dentists work with you and help resolve the problem?
--------------------
Clearly dentists work for you, it is their job. When you go to a supermarket, someone serves you. It is their job. You do not need insurance to pay for dental work, you can pay upfront. This is a serious issue, and having left it for such a stupidly long time, you are liekly to have lasting damage. You should get this checked immediately.

Treatment for receding gum line?

I don't have dental insurance so i'm looking for an at home treatment for receding gum lines. I noticed it starting to happen about a month ago, and it's mainly just happening to the front teeth on the top row. Any suggestions would be helpful thank you!
--------------------
There's no treatment, only prevention. Use a soft tooth brush if you aren't already, but other than that a dentist will be able to tell you how to further prevent the recession.

should i remove my permanent dental crown?

i don't have insurance until august 07 and i have a horrible odor coming from underneath my metal/ceramic permanent crown. i can't see the doc because i can't afford it w/o insurance. can someone tell me, if it was a good idea for me to take it off myself? it's already a bit, i'm sure if i keep shaking it it will come off eventually. i did have a root canal done before the crown was put on, does that mean i won't feel pain when i eat drink hot cold? please serious answers only, i know that i need to go as soon as i can but i'm afraid my tooth or flesh is rotting underneath my crown and it's bad and embarrassing. i do brush and floss regularly but maybe because the tooth had been shakey just a tiny bit for a long time... it could've done something to it? , it's the only location it's coming from.. i scrub my tongue all the time and the only time the odor gets set off is when i floss.thanks
--------------------
I would not do anything to it myself. You could try using hydrogen peroxide for a mouth rinse, make sure you do not swallow it. It will help "boil out" any foreign material in there, and help you gums, as well. I had a bad case of gingivitis and halitosis (bad breath) that's how I took care of it. My dentist is "old school" and he said to do this. It's inexpensive and very effective at controlling odors.

What is life insurance for?

I know car insurance means the government pays the money for your repairs if you have an accident so you don't have to reach into your own account, same with medical insurance in all its forms (dental, etc), but I wonder what life insurance is for. I guess it serves as an inheritance for the relatives (via birth, marriage) of the deceased in the event that person dies and the survivors collect a lot of debt in terms of having to pay for funeral services and their house notes and bills. I don't know. I'm just guessing. I see lots of insurance TV commericals. I'm 24 so I was just a little curious. It seems to me like life insurance advertising is mostly directed toward spouses and parents. That further does make me feel life insurance is kind of an inheritance from the government in case someone dies with dependents so those other relatives under the care of the deceased have money to eat and clothe.
--------------------
Car insurance is *not* the government paying the bill. It's the other people who are also insured by the same company who *didn't* have an accident. Ditto for private medical insurance. Life insurance is an option for people who want to leave money. (And no, it doesn't have to be a relative.) Spouses get it for each other and their children because they make financial decisions based on the assumption they will be alive to earn money. Leaving insurance if you die means your spouse can pay the mortgage, buy food and the children can go to college. Life insurance is also sold to parents to cover their children. Those policies are over priced. Great deal for the insurer, lousy deal for the parent.

You misjudged me with dental question?

Thanks for all the answers to my query about braces for my son, quite helpful. To Stacey C I didn't explain myself very well, I was asking the question to judge a funding issue, and not to scrounge off the NHS, my husband and I pay taxes and national insurances like everyone else, and are working for a British company.
--------------------
Well said Sue. You will have to pay the standard nhs charge unless you are in receipt of tax credits and/or child benefit. Best of luck to the little one.

Dental Crowns vs Dental Implants?

well i have to get 3 crowns and it about 850 each to do them i have no insurance. there are other cost a well. it going to be 1200 per tooth when it all said and done. or should i just have Dental Implants done ? it going to be about 1,000 per tooth. it will last a life time , and money not that big of a deal. I think i am going to make an appointment and see what they can do.
--------------------
It is always better to keep your own teeth. Doing the crowns is a better choice unless your dental hygiene is poor. Implants are more than $1000.00 each. That is usually just the cost for the implant, not the crown that needs to be placed on the implant itself. You have Oral sugeon cost for the implant, and lots of lab costs involved. When you do the crown usually the $850 each is all inclusive. If you floss, brush, and see your dentist on a regular basis crowns are the better choice. But if you have really bad teeth, that are beyond saving implants are the better choice.

why are insurance companys rip offs?

how is it that you pay extra for dental ins. and they tell you that you can't use it for a year. let's see if they could live with a toothache for a year. can i get my money back that was paid into it?
--------------------
Agreed, we pay for homeowners insurance, I have a leaky roof and the first thing out of their mouth, this was a preexisting condition, sorry but we can't do it. WHAT! Then why am I giving you my money then? Well because all of the fat cats on capital hill say we have to have it in order to buy a house, that great so once again someone else is getting rich off of me.

What does insurance write-off mean?

When you see this on your doctor or dental statement or bill, what does it mean?
--------------------
On a doctor or dental statement, it means the doctor charged $50 for the visit but the insurance only allowed $45 so the doctor wrote off the other $5. When Doctors contract with a PPO, the PPO generally has an amount they will pay for certain things. If the doctor charges more for that particular proceedure, the PPO will only pay their maximum amount. Since the doctor has agreed to bill by the PPO's price list when he became a provider for the PPO, he cannot come back and charge the patient the additional amount so he writes it off as an insurance write-off.

Non Impacted Wisdom Teeth Removal?

All 4 of my wisdom teeth are non-impacted. I'm going to have 2 of them removed soon. 1 of them is kind of chipped in the back, but the majority of the tooth is still up. I'm sure they're both pretty rotten. My question is, will they be able to remove these teeth with only local anaesthesia (novacain shots)? Will they have to cut into my gums and remove bone? I dont have dental insurance, and am trying to have this done as cheaply as possible. Thanks.
--------------------
if your wisdom teeth are not impacted, it will come out very easly. Simple LA should do.

How2 negotiate lower Dentist fee?

Hubby wants me to ask Dentist for a discount on routine dental care for 2 children. We have no dental insurance & have to pay cash. How does one go about asking for a dentist to lower fees or charge less for routine dental exam? I hate haggling & don't do so. When purchasing car I decide how much I can pay, tell dealer so, & don't go over my alloted amount.
--------------------
I know that where i work the dentists will give discounts but im not sure how they figure it out. You should probably call and ask to talk to someone in Financial and ask if there are any discounts you could get.

Health Insurance-Fairmont Premier Ins. Co.?

Does anyone have a policy with this company? I'm trying to find new family health insurance because the premiums through work are very high. This health insurance through Premiere quoted me $459.85 per month (me, husband and son). They give you a drug card for Rx's through BCBS of Oregon and its a $15 copay (which is excellent). They also cover a portion of dental through Aetna Dental. She said something about we would be billed a portion of the pre-negotiated bill for a doctor visit after Fairmont pays. Anyway, does anyone have coverage through Fairmont? Are you satisfied with it? Do you end up paying more than you thought?
--------------------
The company may be OK, although the A.M. Best rating is only B+. The plans are hospital certificates, not major medical. This means they are very limited as to what they pay. For example, if you need an ambulance ride they only pay $50. The average ride in my state is $1000 so you pay $950. They only pay $50 for ONE emergency room visit per year. The average in my state is $1500 so you pay $1450. The average hospital stay in my state is 5 days and cost $15,000. They will pay up to $1000 per day which leaves you paying $10,000. The doctor network is very limited. If you sign up with this plan make sure to search a doctor first to verify that they're still on the plan and that they're accepting new patients. My advice would be to visit a local independent agent. This person can compare the plans available in your area to find out the best plan for your situation and budget. They don't charge any extra for the service.

Dental Work?

Is there a way to get dental work done for free or very low cost for someone with limit cash flow and no insurance in NY?
--------------------
You might want to check with a college of medicine that has dentistry section. Your worked on by interns who are tops in their class and are supervised. Normally the students are in the top 1 - 3% and are using this experience to get just a better grip on the real world of dentistry. Check your yellow pages for the name and number under colleges, medical schools etc. I know that in Houston it is UTMB I do not however know what the schools name would be for your area. Good luck.

Aspen Dental- Scam?

I am 29 and I had to get a full upper denture, it has been nothing less than a painful experience. To start, they were all nice when I went in and came up with a treatment plan, went over the insurance coverage and even gave me a 5% discount for paying my portion ($1,680.00) in advance. It seemed great, until the day of the extractions. I got a lady who did not speak english to well, spend 4 hours in the chair getting teeth pulled. She numbed me only to walk away for about 20 mins and then started working, even after I told her I wasnt numb anymore. After 4 hours of gripping the chair and the assistant urging her to give me more numbing shots, I looked like I went 25 rounds with a boxer. Now I get a bill stating I owe another 1,200.00 that no one can explain. My EOB from the INS says they owe me 1,000, however in the true "Aspen Shuffle" as I now dub it, I get a new answer and new person each time I call, just like their dentists. They run more of a dental farm than dental office.
--------------------
I would call the office and get a ledger from them which would show all the services (charges) and all your payments and the insurance payments. Then I would compare the EOBs you have received from your insurance company to their bill. The easiest way to do this is by date of service. So total the charge for each date of service, then subtract out your payment, your insurance payment, and any contract adjustments. (If your dentist is contracted with your insurance company they can only charge the allowable,PDP,Contract allowance,or UCR fee- the difference between their fee and the contracted fee is a write off and you are not responsible to pay it.) After you do your calculations if all the services have been paid for and there is a credit the office owes you, then I would contact them with that information. Due to the "Aspen Shuffle" you may not get very far, this is when I would contact your insurance company, they can then do a 3-way call with you and their billing department to get your bill all worked out. If your insurance denied something or did not pay as estimated then you could still have a balance, but after doing the math you will know for sure. It sounds very frustrating, I hope that helps and good luck!

Ways to pay for expensive dental procedures?

I'm a college student with very little money and no way of getting financial help from my family. I have school insurance, which would only cover wisdom tooth extraction; all other dental procedures would have to be managed out of pocket. I'm long overdue for a cleaning, and i need two broken teeth pulled...but the scariest thing is that I have an untreated abscess on one of the broken teeth. It's been left untreated for a while since I cant afford to have it treated...and now on top of a very painful tooth and swollen gum I have a chronically sore, hard lymph node on the same side of my neck. I'm terrified of the complications that I'm facing from this abscess, but there really is no way I can pay for these procedures out of pocket. Can I find a way to get this treatment at a manageable cost? I've looked into dental discount cards, but even with those I'd have to pay upfront. I'm in boston, but will be visiting family on long island for another week or so. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, as well as any ideas as to how much i might end up spending on this.
--------------------
you can get carecredit if the dental provider accepts it or you can ask to make a payment plan.

Cheap Dental-Dentist Help!!!!?

I need to have my wisdom teeth pulled and probably should of had them pulled a few years ago but I don't have coverage and I'm in enough debt that I wouldn't be able to finance it. I live in MD and there is only one dental school and I plan to call but I think they are very expensive. They take insurance which really makes me think it's high there. Will it be cheaper to get a dentist to pull them rather then a oral surgeon?

is it okay to take amoxocillian that is a year and half old?? My wisdom teeth are infecting my gums....?

I called western dental, because I dont have insurance, my teeth have been hurting me since Sunday and I am sure it is my wisdom teeth, I called and the dentist receptionist said that I most likley have an infection, and I need to take amocillian, but I dont have the $cash they need right now to get the antibiotics....
--------------------
You need to take the advice of 'Dr. Receptionist" with a grain of salt. No one should make a diagnosis over the phone, especially an hourly employee. If the gingival tissue over/around your wisdom teeth is merely inflamed, not infected, you may be taking the amoxicillin without good reason. The indiscriminate use of antibiotics is causing a problem worldwide with the development of resistant strains of bacteria. Find a way to have your problem diagnosed properly so that it can be treated properly. Incidentally, the amoxicillin you have may or may not still be effective.
