What's the BEST way to fix healthcare in the US?

If we go to a socialized system we will end up like Canada with 50% tax rates and insufficient practitioners (that's why they come here), or like Britain where you have to wait up to 6 months for operations, and people are so desperate to see dentists they have to pull their own teeth, and a company called DIY Dental that sells over-the-counter filling material and temporary caps does booming business? To FIX the US healthcare--you have to understand the problem. Imagine first having "grocery insurance"---you'd buy prime rib and caviar and champagne with abandon! Or "gas insurance" you'd always buy supreme! Without an incentive of checks and balances, there's no way to reduce costs. In West Virginia, they found that by rebating 10% of the nearly 100% error rate on hospital bills back to clients, that they immediately saved nearly one half on Medicaid costs.

Make people get a job and buy insurance, It works for me. My wife and I both work and pay 466 a month for insurance. It is very good insurance and i work hard to afford it. Why should I pay for someone who is too lazy to work and get their own insurance. If you can't afford health insurance then the govenment should set something up. It would be crappy but better than nothing. I see no reason someone should get the same insurance I get when I work damn hard for it.

I have to get a crown on upper molar.?

I had a large filling done yesterday and was told I need a crown put on it as soon as possible to prevent the tooth from cracking. My question is, she told me the price for the crown would cost $500-650. Do you think that is just for the crown or for everything? I don't have dental insurance so this is all going to be out of pocket. What should I expect once I get the crown put on? Will I notice its there?
--------------------
I would encourage you to visit this great site www.healthsavings.ourperfectcard.com I signed up online over 6 years ago and they have saved me thousands of dollars on all dental procedures. From Root canals, xrays, exams, cleanings, crowns....etc. Even my braces had fantastic coverage. They even had my affordable benefits active in 2 hours and was able to use them the very same day. Good luck and hope this helps you out.

I live in the Dallas Ft Worth area and I am in need of some dental and orthodontal work.?

I cant find a good insurance or an office that work with me (i dont qualify for care credit or anyother credit cards) Any advice?
--------------------
You have four options with dental. 1. Visit a local dental school. You can get most procedures done for a reduced price if you're willing to let them practice on you and actually they are very good. 2. Insurance - Depending upon the policy: cost $30-$60 per month. You pay a $50 deductible first, they have an annual maximum that they'll pay per year of $750 - $1500, they have a waiting period up to 18 months for major work and then you're paying 50% of the charges. Example - average cost for a root canal in my area is $829. With insurance you pay $414 after paying 18 months of premium (around $800 or $900). Advantage - you can use any dentist with most plans. 3. Discount plans - Cost - $5-$12 per month. No deductible, no annual maximum and no waiting periods. Also, hardly any dentists will accept the plan and when they do you MIGHT get a 10% discount, which is about the same discount you can get by paying cash. Example - average cost for a root canal in my area is $829. With discount plans you pay around $746. Be very wary of these plans because most are scams. The people that sell these plans have little or no knowledge about health & dental insurance and do not need a license to sell them. The plans are not regulated by the state so you have no recourse when you have problems. Some states are starting to ban these plans from being sold. Here is an informative link http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/wes… concerning these plans. 4. Fee for Service discount plans - Cost $7-$15 per month. No deductible, no annual maximum and no waiting periods. Many dentist will accept the plan (check providers first before signing up with any plan). When you use the plan there is a set fee that the dentist will charge you. Example - average cost for a root canal in my area is $829. With fee for service plans you pay as little as $404. I'm an insurance agent and my personal plan is the fee for service plan. I got mine here http://www.dpbrokers.com/default.aspx?lo… specifically the Aetna Dental Access plan but which one you get depends upon your area and comparing the fee schedule to find the best for what you need covered.

Question regarding dental plans?

I just signed up for Avai dental plan and on the member card it says This is not insurance. It is a reduced fee plan. That scared the heck out of me. Does that mean I need to PURCHASE insurance first in order to use this reduced fee plan?? PLEASE HELP!!
--------------------
No, you do not have to purchase dental insurance in order to use the reduced fee plan. Although dental insurance is a better option, it can be very expensive. Most employers no longer offer dental insurance to their employees, but will offer the reduced fee plan instead. Most dentists that participate in these plans offer significant reductions in fees for their services. Reduced fee dental plans are also good for people (like me) that are self employed.

Tooth pain & its not cavities? Can it be the braces?

I have braces and faithfully brush my teeth four times a day (more if Im snacking or feel my teeth irritated). Well lately, my teeth on the bottom left side hurt and one on the top side as well. It seems like anything I eat or drink(hot, cold, non-sweet) hurt my teeth. Even brushing and rinsing hurts. Ive been living on Motrin, Orajel, Ambusol, etc. Went to my dentist today and they found no cavaties and no reason for the pain. It seems like even breathing in causes pain. I havent been to my ortho in a few months and my dentist feels like it might be related to the braces. Anyone with braces have the same problem or pain? I dont have dental insurance anymore so its costing me out of my own poceket to go to these specialists to just get the runaround...
--------------------
Yes, my upper right tooth started hurting when I had the braces and still hurts even without the braces. I don't know if it's the same pain as yours, mine doesn't hurt when breathing or anything, but touching it or chewing on it makes it hurt (also cold&hot drinks make it hurt). I thought it was about braces...but my orthodontist said it was sensitive and soon the pain would go away. I do not use braces anymore and the pain is still there although not as disturbing as before. I went to the dentist to see if it had cavities...and she told me there was no problem with it. Now, I've learnt how to live with it I think. I try not to chew on it, and it's fine. :)

I haven't been to the dentist's in awhile and...?

Well, it's been maybe...9 or 10 years since I've last been to the dentist. When my mom can get dental insurance next year, I want to get my teeth whitened, cavities filled, and invisalign braces. Anyone know the pricing (about) for teeth whitening and invisalign? I know prices vary, but we're tight on cash, and a ballpark figure would be nice :) I want invisalign so I can still play my instrument about the same. Thanks a lot!
--------------------
A quick Google search brought me with these answers. A typical bleach teeth whitening session can cost $650. Invisalign braces cost from $3500 to $8000. And on top of that you say you have cavities to be filled which would make the cost go up even more. 10 years is an INSANELY long time not to go to the dentist, as one should go every 6 months for a teeth cleaning and check up, to avoid extensive damage. Though, I understand this was due to lack of funds available for such care.

If i get approved through Care Credit, is it affective immediately?

I need about $2500 worth of dental work done & i do not have insurance so im thinking of applying for care credit. Anyone know how soon i will be able to use it if im approved?
--------------------
If you dentist takes Care Credit you can apply for the card right at the dentist office and once you are approved they can bill your card right then & there. Care credit seems like a very good company to work with. Just be careful with what plan you take because if you choose the intrest free plan and it is not paid off by the number of months you picked you will have to pay intrest on the entire thing.

Dental/Medical receptionists: busy job?

To anyone who has worked as a dental or medical receptionist: how busy was your job? did you have various tasks when not answering phones, filing, and calling insurance companies? How much downtime was there?
--------------------
I just started as a receptionist at a Family Medicine clinic and we are constantly busy. You don't do a lot besides phones, filing, & insurance claims but there's always so much of it to do. Sometimes we work on compiling medicine lists of our patients to make sure nothing is conflicting. We have 3 girls in the office everyday and none of us are ever bored. You also have to deal with the representatives from the different pharmaceutical companies that come in to try and have samples of their medicine in our office. We get 2 15 minute breaks and 30 minute lunch break that's paid for in an 8 hour day. But I also have a friend who works as a receptionist in a dentists office and she's no where near as busy, so I guess it depends on the size of the office you're working for.

Question on health insurance terms (First Time Buyer)…?

Work offers insurance at $20 that for part-time with pay 25% of health care bills. The plan does not include vision or dental for part-time so was looking into few different insurance companies. Have a question on a quote that talks about deductible. It is a $10,000 deductible the wording makes it sound that additional coverage will not be covered until paid. It seems strange so possibly misinterpreting it. What does deductible mean from health care insurance?
--------------------
The others are right on what a deductible is, so i wont beat a dead horse. What i would recommend is not getting to worried about finding a health insurance with dental included. And i say that because its easy to get dental insurance or a dental plan outside of health insurance. You can even get some dental plans as cheap as 6.95 for one person per month. So to sum it up, Yes the others are right on the definition of deductible. But check out a discount dental plan (which usually has vision for free with it) or a dental insurance out side of a health insurance.

I need help choosing a health insurance?

I live in Southern California (If that matters). I'm young and healthy but I have been without health insurance for the last year. I was wondering who is your health insurance provider and if you would recommend it. I don't have much money since I just graduated from SDSU and without a teaching job:( But I am willing to pay the little money I have for health insurance. Thanks! I will need one that will cover dental and vision the big ones for me since I need to take my wisdom teeth out (giving me big headaches) and I wear glasses which need to be replaced soon. Thanks in advance.
--------------------
Dental and vision are seperate policies, from health insurance. So you're talking about THREE insurance policies - one dental, one vision, and one health. I've never seen any private dental or vision policies that pay out more than they cost, so my recommendation is pay out of pocket. There will be serious coverage limitations and wait times, for that wisdom teeth removal bit. If you're 25 and perfectly healthy, a good low/no deductible plan should cost you around $250 a month. A local agent is probably who you need to talk to about this, but I'm sure they'll tell you the same thing.

What does annual maximum mean ?

What does annual maximum of 1500$ in my dental insurance plan mean?If a dental procedure cost 100$ and insurance pays 60$ and i pay 40$, does full 100$ is counted toward 1500$ annual maximum, or just 60$ (as insurance company has paid only 60)
--------------------
As far as I know, it only counts what Insurance pays. So, it should be $60 towards your plan.

Help! Dont know what to do about a high dental bill?

Oh my goodness. Ok, wasnt using my head when I went to see this dentist about a broken filling I had. Well, I went outside my network of dentists on my insurance plan. I go into his office and he only gives me one option for a filling and proceeds to start prepping my tooth for this filling. Turns out, it was the most expensive filling he offered. On top of that I havent received a bill yet and the nurse just told me that the approximate amount was going to be $1,087. She says I have to pay everything up front when I come in to have the filling placed in my mouth. Right now I have a temporary and I asked if I could go with another kind of filling, she tells me it's too late. They have already taken the impression of my tooth and I have to pay for the whole thing. I feel like I was taken advantage of. What do I do?
--------------------
WOW!! Over a thousand for a filling. Call another dentist for another opinion. That sounds like a really outrageous amount of money for that procedure. Best of luck to you. If you have a temporary filling in your mouth, well, it is kinda like having braces and going to another dentist to have them removed. They usually will not remove the braces because it is a sign that you did not pay the dentist that put the braces on the the first place.

what exactly would you change so that a root canal does not cost close to $1000 in the USA?

or a dental implant does not cost upwards of $4,000, or that comprehensive health insurance for a healthy family of 4 does not cost the employer and employee a combined $15,000 a year in annual premiums?. Please, I am talking commons sense practical changes that make sense and would put strong downward pressure on prices of healthcare in the USA.
--------------------
Maybe the television in the ceiling and full cable channel access isn't all that necessary.

My crown is falling out...what can I do?

I have two crowns (after root canals )in the front of my mouth on the top. one of my front teeth and then the one beside it. the front one started to wiggle and eventually fell out. now the one beside it is doing the same thing!!!! I don't have dental insurance so I have to go when I can afford it, and being a woman...this is quite embarrassing. Why would this be happening? Also..when the dentist put the first one back in...it hurt and he said that I shouldn't feel it at all. Any suggestions?
--------------------
This exact same thing happened to me! My dentist would not re cement for free, I needed a post inserted. Ugh, so I started using this temporary dental cement made especially for crowns, bought it at Walgreens for about $5 It was not very good, my tooth would be loose by the end of the day, I couldn't eat or say anything starting with a F. So, I got ghetto and put a tiny dab of superglue, it worked for like 6 months until I could save the money to get a post put in my mouth. The dentist wasn't too happy but he said he's seen worse. I was not about to walk around with missing front teeth. I wonder why it hurt when he put the crown back in, you should have root canals where your crowns are. I hope it isn't something else like an abcess.

Health Insurance???

I am needing to find a health insurance plan for my family. It will be for my husband & I and our 2 girls. I am looking for something that will cover it all....health, dental, vision....whatever. If anyone can kind of point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it. Or if you have any tips for me. I really don't even know where to begin.... Oh and my husband is self employed....he's an independent contractor (if that helps at all)
--------------------
There is no one best company and with health insurance you get what you pay for. Visit a local agent that works with all the major companies in your area. The agent can find the best plan for your situation and budget and can explain what you get and, more importantly, what you won't get with any plan. There is no extra charge using an agent. Most individual policies don't include dental and vision. Some will have limited dental and vision as an optional benefit at an additional cost but when you do the math you are generally better off without the coverage. The agent can show you the plans with this option. Do not try to do this over the internet. It'll take you several days to intelligently compare all the plans available. Also, if you have any pre-existing conditions that might add a rider to the policy, cause you to be declined, or if you are out of the height and weight guidelines you won't know until you've applied and gone through the underwriting process.

Hole in my back tooth. Is Mexico a good place to go to get this filled?

A co worker informed me that when she had her two children, two of her teeth feel out (just crumbled) since the calcium was sucked out of her bones. She said she went to Mexico to get them filled. Is this is a good idea and how much would it cost if I did go? I don't have dental insurance and I don't want my tooth pulled! thanks
--------------------
I live in San Diego which is like 20 minutes from Mexico and alot of my friends go to Mexico for dental work. I guess you can get the work done for like 1/3 of the cost. Many of the dentists have gone to school in the US and speak english etc. but work in Mexico. If I didn't have dental insurance I would definitely consider it.

Does Tricare Standard have optical and dental?

My husband was recalled by the US Army this January, and all I know is now I have Tricare Standard insurance. Does anybody know if it has optical or dental?
--------------------
Dental is not covered in your Tricare prime or standard. You have to go to Tricare to get a form for dental and send a your fist payment with the form and it usually can take anywhere from 2 weeks to a month to be enrolled in dental. From there on out you have to pay like 11 dollars a month for individual dental and like 20 for family and it will be taken directly from you marines pay.

My daughter had surgery to remove an impacted tooth. Did I get cheated?

The dentist/oral surgeon wanted to do the operation at a hospital instead of his office. Everything went great untill I had to pay for it. I got stuck with the entire bill, because my dental insurance said "it was a medical proceadure" and my medical insurance said "it was a dental proceadure. What can I do to make these dead beat insurance anancys pay their part?
--------------------
No, you have to appeal it. I'm assuming your daughter was pretty young, and needed a general anesthesia. I actually had to have a dental procedure done on one of my babies for medical reasons - he was born severely tongue tied. Same thing. It took six months of followups to get paid. Dental denied as voluntary, medical denies as dental, lots of letter writing and phone calls, but there was a feeding issue so it had to be done. And it got done. Just stay polite when you talk to the morons at the insurance company, and you'll get farther, faster.

Health insurance. Is it worth it? Wouldn't it be cheaper to pay out of pocket?

My job does not offer insurance and even my husbands job offers expensive insurance that would cost us over $115 a month for health and dental for us. All we want is two dental cleanings a year and one or two visits to the doctor for when we get the flu (which we do get, every year). Wouldn't it be cheaper just to pay for the doctor visit instead of paying hundreds to an insurance company only to get half off at the doctor?
--------------------
If you don't go to the doctors often, do not get it, Your wasting your money. If you do go the doctor often, every year, then I suggest having it. Out of pocket in the end will be more expensive with the cost of medication. .
