I need a dentist in Georgia.?

Hi, Does anyone know of a good dentist in the Lithonia, GA or Decatur, GA, or Stone Mountain, GA area? Especially one that works with kids? We also have Delta Dental insurance plan. I appreciate any names that you could give me! Thanks

Horizontal Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

I am 17 years old and the dentist has found that I have two horizontally impacted wisdom teeth on the bottom. I was wondering how much it would cost to remove them (I live in Florida). I was also wondering that how soon should I get the surgery because I did have braces and i don't want to mess up the alignment. Other info is that I have Sunlife Dental Insurance with only a policy of up to $1500, and I have already used up $900.

Why can't pop, candy, and deep fried cooking be illegal?

Diabetes, obesity, tooth decay, and heart attacks--yum those taste GREAT...can I have another? These also lead to an increase in Health Care costs/Health-Dental Insurance and laziness--which hurts the economy. Heck obesity has even been known to break up marriages, social rejection, and low self esteem. And what diabetic likes carrying around their 'crap'?
--------------------
Hmmm. Obesity, tooth decay, heart attacks. Yep, have to agree with you there. Diabetes? Where the hell did you get the idea that diabetes is solely caused by what we consume? You had a great premise going and then almost totally ruined it with your ignorance of this condition. While diabetes CAN have a dietary and/or lifestyle cause, it is generally caused by some other factor (ie genetics, age etc.). The link I've provided below should get you up to speed on it. Otherwise, great question. Heart attacks can also have various causes (ie an injury, resulting in a venal or arterial blood-clot that travels through the heart) although the major cause is, indeed, dietary. Even obesity can have an underlying cause, other than solely dietary. An underactive thyroid gland (Hypothyroidism), if untreated, can cause massive weight-gain and lead to obesity, among other problems. Some obese people suffer from a form of OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder), which causes them to form an obsession with food and to eat compulsively. Again, though, the major cause of obesity is not an underlying illness, but is solely dietary. Tooth decay IS solely dietary, although following a strict oral hygiene routine can reduce the incidences dramatically. While I agree that these 3 are raising Health & dental care costs, I don't believe the answer lies in making anything illegal. Better education is the answer - it isn't good enough to say that fatty foods could make you obese, or that excessive amounts of candy will give you toth decay. That said, can you really see the soft-drink/candy manufacturers or the giant fast-food chains allowing this? Or how about the health/dental insurance companies and health/dental care providers? No. There's too much profit to be lost.

Teeth xrays and cleaning question..?

It's been awhile since I have been to a dentist to get a check up or a cleaning, or anything along those lines. I have been having really sensitive teeth and want to get xrays to make sure nothing is wrong with them, and they are gray/clear on the tips of some of them. I am worried and I was wondering how much this may be. I know it won't be exact since it varies, but just an approx. amount will help me out. *I also have dental insurance.
--------------------
Most dental insurances cover x-rays, exams, and cleanings at 100% so you don't have to pay anything. You can always call your insurance company to check or call your dentist office and they can check for you.

Will retainers re-straighten my teeth?

I wore braces for over a year, but got them off over 4 years ago. Since then I've supposed to have been wearing two retainers (top and bottom) at night. About 10 months ago I stopped wearing them, since I figured I probably didn't have to wear them at night my whole life and since I'd rarely missed my teeth would be fine. Lately I've noticed that my bottom teeth are a bit crooked again, and the retainers don't fit very well. If I start wearing them again, will they straighten my teeth back? I don't have good dental insurance so I can't afford an orthodonist visit.
--------------------
It is possible that the retainers may help to realign your teeth back. But if your teeth have shifted too much, it may be too late for the retainer to get them back to where they need to be. I know you indicated that you don't have good dental insurance, but check with the orthodontist's office to see if any follow-up visits may still be covered by what you had already paid. It will probably be a whole lot cheaper to get the problem fixed now then to wait several years from now. Unfortunately the teeth will probably continue to shift. Try the retainers first. Your mouth will probably be a little sensitive while your teeth keep shifting. If you continue to go without your retainer, your teeth will keep shifting. All orthodontist should give brace wearers a big flashing sign of the importance of the retainers after the braces are removed. I sure hope that it's not too late and the retainer still fits to get your teeth realigned.

Should I save my tooth?

I have to decide whether or not to have a tooth extracted ($300) or have a root canal with crown ($2200). It's an upper back molar and won't be noticeable and I can learn to chew without it, but the idea of losing a tooth really freaks me out. I have no dental insurance and my husband and I have both been laid off and are looking for work. What would you do??

Independent Health Insurance?

My work offers vision, medical, and dental, but I'm only getting dental and vision from them. Medical is wwaayyyy to expensive, so I'm looking at independent health companies. Anyone know the best one or ones they approve of? I'm looking at Assurent health right now, so like a good deal, what do you guys think? I'm 24 and healthy if that helps...I just need the peace of mind in case something happened.
--------------------
You should phone a local independent insurance agent from the phone book and ask for recommendations from different companies about their plans to fit your needs.

pre paying for med visit or dental visit?

This year I have noticed that every doctor visit i have been to aor taken my child to has been money up front services later. We do have insurance and do pay our bills....whats up with that is it legal? and am i just being overly sensitive about paying first? the receptionist will be the last person i see before i can exit any way.
--------------------
Good qestion. "Is it legal?" you ask. Yes it is legal to get the money before a patient is seen. I am a dentist and can tell you our side of why sometimes we do this. First off, some insurances are tough to deal with...I know some dentists that have to make constant calls and get reimbursed months later. By collecting the money upfront and giving you a receipt...we pass this headache to the patient. Understanding that the overhead in most offices runs around 65-75% of what they produce, it's important to the dentist to get that money on time. Secondly, while you admittingly have no problems paying what your insurance doesn't cover...many patients will argue and refuse to pay if there insurance doesn't entirely cover a procedure. Trust me when I say we know how expensive our product is...but so are alot of things these days including the $200,000 dental school bill I incurred. Having said all this I think it is handy to go to a dentist who takes insurance and doesn't require the money up front. I intend to do it this way but many dentists get as frustrated as you are with the whole process. Good Luck to you and try not to be offended. If it is too much though...then you may need to find another dentist. Update: Sounds like poor scheduling...I have only had one time when I was a half hour behind. Again...unless you love the dentistry..find another office. good luck

Does Washington University here in St. Louis accept pregnant women as patients for their students?

I am 6 months pregnant and my Dr. passed away last Saturday. he took on women who did not have insurance and preferred having their babies at home. I do not have insurance and my husband and I make too much for medicaid. I know SLU and Wash U take on dental patients for their students but what about prenatal care?
--------------------
I think the chances are unlikely, but there may not be a firm policy. It may depend upon how they like your story. So if you take a positive approach, show need, etc, you may have a chance.

Dental work while pregnant?

im not sure about getting the teeth removed, i am waiting till i have the baby to do that. but other dental work is fine, you just have to have a note from your ob/gyn saying you can have it done. Good luck!

Child Support Question?

My husband has a 13 year old daughter and we are now starting to see her alot more. He pays about 400 a month, plus all the medical and dental insurance for her, another 300 a month. Mother is not paying anything for medical and dental insurance and is against the court order now 8 plus years. We have not done anything about it because we can not afford an attorney. My question is, if we have the child over the summer months, do we have to pay the mother child support? Plus if not, how and who do we call to stop it. The support comes directly out of his paycheck every month. My husband and this woman were never married.

What is total cost for Dentures?

A friend of my mother's needs full dentures. Her insurance only covers part of dental work. And she was wanting to know how much it will cost total. Including extractions, dentist fees, and dentures. Thank you.
--------------------
Cost is dependent on what all she needs to have done. The cheapest way to get it done is to find a dental school near by and go to them....they're usually about 30-50% cheaper than private practice. It's not uncommon for a treatment plan including extractions and dentures to cost $1500 or more at a dental school, depending on the number of teeth that need to come out, the difficulty of their extraction, and any other treatments that may need to be done (tissue conditioning, bone removal, etc.) Most insurance will cover at least part of a set of dentures. The best bet is to get a full treatment plan from the dentist (either dental school or private practice) and then you can talk to your insurance about what would be covered and what wouldn't. I would stay away from the bargain denture places. In dentures, and many other areas of dentistry, you get what you pay for. There are lots of ways to make a poor denture, and you want your mother's friend to have a good experience and great end product so she is confident and comfortable wearing her denture.

What is the hole in our health care system that needs fixing?

I hear there are millions of working americans and their families that have no health insurance..due to employers not offering it.....which sounds like a very bad situation. But I also often hear that everyone in this country has access to free health care if they need it. I also know that in politics people will exaggerate things to make their case so they can have their way. Which is it, are millions of americans not getting health care? Are millions of elderly gettting healthcare but its not really adequate, and their prescriptions unaffordable? Is health care too expensive? Maybe we dont have a problem at all as others say.. Which is it? If your positions is that everyone has access to good free preventative health and dental care, then please be kind enough to explain how it works...does it vary from state to state? Are some states not providing adequate free health care for those who need it? So many questions....but I think you get the idea, please give good information
--------------------
WOW, get ready for a can of worms. No, everyone does not have access to free health care if they need it. There are Emergency Rooms for health emergencies if you don't have health insurance. They have to treat you for life threatening emergencies by law. If you go to the ER with strep throat because you don't have any insurance, they might hem and haw but they'll still treat you. If you have a chronic condition, they'll do the least possible for you to get you out of the ER. Hospitals have clinics based on a sliding scale for those who don't have insurance, you often have to wait a long time for appointments. The doctors in the clinic are often overworked, or newly trained. Again, people with chronic conditions do not get the best treatment possible, and frequently, even if they work hard or worked hard all their lives, are treated like dirt because they dont' have insurance. Quality care is not available for those who do not have insurance. Preventive care is non existant, the working poor often to not have enough money to spare for preventive care. The elderly have medicare which gets cut further year after year, leaving many people to have to choose between buying medication or groceries. If the elderly don't eat well, they are prone to strokes or heart attacks. Often they have to live with other relatives to make ends meet. I feel that the problem is the insurance and pharmaceutical companies lobbyists. They have far too much power. People say they don't want the gov't in our health care, well, it already is because of the power we have allowed them to have. We also have third party insurance which is through our employers...why do we need that? Why can't we get affordable health insurance on our own, like car insurance? Employer insurance came about during WW2 to attract workers to the unions. It's an outdated way of handling insurance, we need to look at that as well. A really good book on this subject is "Uninsured in American-Life and Death in the Land of Opportunity" by Susan Starr Stared that really covers this problem in depth and shows that it's not a problem of the poor but crosses many cultures and classes. Great question, a star for you! EDIT- thank YOU, Bert T for the compliment, I always enjoy your answers and you did it again this time. Let's hope we get somewhere with the new administration.

CARE CREDIT?? EVERY doctor and dentist, or only certain ones?

Does EVERY doctor/dentist/veterinarean accept CARE CREDIT, or only certain ones? I have minimal dental insurance and am in dire need od getting a wisdom tooth pulled. Do I have to find a dentist that not only accepts my insurance, but ALSO accepts Care Credit, or do ALL dentists accept Care Credit? It' hard enough to find a dentist that accepts military coverage ={
--------------------
Sorry, not all dentists accept care credit. They have to be under contract with care credit and pay a fee to accept the card and get the electronics necessary. However, many dentists do take it and you should be able to find one pretty easily. Good luck!

What does 4 quads of SC/RP mean?

My husband just had a several teeth extracted at the dentist (wisdom and a couple permanent) He unfortunantly needs alot of dental work done....the dentist said he has 9 cavities and he also needs "4 quads of SC/RP" Can someone tell me what this is. Also does anyone know how much we might expect to pay to have the rest of this work done... we don't have dental insurance so it's all out of pocket. Thank you!
--------------------
The 4 quads that they are referring to means 4 quadrants, the upper left, upper right, lower left and lower right (your mouth divided into 4). SC/RP means scaling and root planing. it's a procedure that is performed to remove tartar and calculus below the gum line, his gums are inflammed and probably bleeding due to the infection and constant irritation of the tartar and calculus. i don't know where you live, but it will probably be around $300 a quad. This is a procedure that can easily be avoided with regular and proper brushing and flossing, if after the procedure he does not maintain good oral hygiene, he will have to have it done again, and again...so Brush and Floss faithfully. By the Way....your dental povider should have explained not only the procedure(s) that need to be done but also printed you out a detailed estimation of costs. If he/she has not done so, then i would definately ask alot of questions prior to having any work performed. Good Luck

I have a wisdom tooth problem...?

I have one wisdom tooth that broke due to me chewing ice, (I know, I know, and I have not done it since) and it hurts almost constantly. It is not swelling, but I can feel a big hole when I rub my tounge across the bottom of it. I cannot afford the 300-400 dollars that a dental surgeon will charge me, I do not have dental insurance, and none of the surgeons will work with me so I could pay payment. What do I do? It is starting to affect my everyday activities. Please no smart-alleck things, this is a serious problem. Thank you in advance.
--------------------
I did the same thing except it wasn't ice that cracked the wisdom tooth. Actually, I chipped it a tiny bit, then bacteria and food got stuck in the chip and it ended up cracking---in half. It was fine for a while, I used antiseptic mouthwash and tried to keep it clean, but two weeks ago it started hurting. I don't have dental insurance either, but I found an oral surgery center with reasonable prices. They looked at the tooth and said it had an abscess, which is an infection. This can be really dangerous and needs to be taken care of right away. I, too, thought that I couldn't afford for the tooth to be pulled, but it was only $149.00 for both the x-ray and the tooth pull. If I were you, I would use antiseptic mouthwash to help prevent infection, invest in some anbesol for the pain, and call around to dental centers to find a dentist who will look at it and extract it at an affordable price. The place I went to is highly regarded and respected, all of my friends had their extractions done there, too. Because I was in your place just two short weeks ago, and really worried about money, I know what you're going through. I don't know where you're from, but I'm sure there are places that cater to those who don't have insurance. Also, some offices offer credit programs to pay for dental procedures. Keep looking and try to take precautions to prevent infection in that tooth. Best of luck to you!
