Given that people in this country are not entitled to free public dental work I have no choice but to get some dental insurance Can you recommend some good companies/plans? thanks!

No such thing...dental insurances are not worth the paper they are written on. Unless your employer is purchasing and providing, avoid self purchase. Start a savings account and use it for dental expense or use Care Credit for emergencies and pay it off in one year interest free!! Good Luck
