I know you pay a monthly fee..so if i got insured could i then straight away go to a private dentist and have work done and the cost be covered (with me paying monthly?)

If you need ANY dental work done then yes dental insurance is absolutely worth it. Anything a dentist does is gonna cost quit a bit and your insurance will cover a percentage of that cost, usually 50-80%, depending what it is and how good your insurance is. It should also cover two cleanings a year at no cost to you.
