What's wrong with my jaw?

The right biting side of my jaw fits fine together, then the left side doesn't really match up well. Most of the time when I chew or open my mouth my jaw makes like a pop noise. What's wrong with me? I don't have dental insurance yet, so there's not much i can do. Would I have to get braces or like reconstructive jaw surgery or something?

It sounds like TMJ. The full name: Tempromandibular Joint Dysfunction. I have had it since I was a pre-teen - and it sucks! It can cause pain in the jaw, and some NASTY headaches. There are specialists who can treat without surgery - and it's generally effective. I understand the no insurance thing though. What MY specialist told me to do was get a football mouth guard & put it in when I go to sleep. That was training my jaw to stay where it should. Then he got me a real bite splint to do the same thing. But the guard would help. Most people with this grind or clench their teeth during sleep or times of stress. You can Google the condition for more info. Good luck!!
