How do I shop for the least expensive, competent dentist to have my son's wisdom teeth removed?

We have no dental insurance, so we pay cash. Our regular dentist does not do oral surgery, and the doctor he referred us to is known to be VERY expensive. . Have already tried the local dental school - frustration and failure!!
