What is the difference between veneers and lumineers?

Are they the same thing? And I know the chances of my insurance company covering for it is very low since it will be done only for cosmetic procedures. But does anyone have any ways to at least increase the chances of the dental insurance paying for my veneers or lumineers? Thanks!
--------------------
Lumineers are brand name veneers which are made by a specific company (Den Mat). They are advertised as relatively thin veneers so that you won't have to trim down your teeth to make room for them. Other labs can also make thin veneers but Den Mat is the one company that had spent a lot of money advertising its brand. Insurance companies can pay for them if they can be justified in strengthening your teeth. If your teeth don't have a lot of fillings, insurance companies will conclude that the veneers are cosmetic.
