Root Canal Question?

I went to the dentist with pain in my tooth. He completely removed the nerve, but said I would need a root canal and then a crown. I have dental insurance, but the cost to me will still be about $500 for all of it. Since I am having no more pain, what will happen if i DONT have the root canal done?

Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years. I don't think he removed the nerve completely because that is what a root canal is. What he may have done is killed the nerve and that is why you are out of pain. However the compete Root canal treatment must be done with a core and crown after or you will lose the tooth completely. Root canaled teeth become very brittle since they are dead an discolor and break down. The whole idea is to keep the root structure and restore is with a natural looking crown so you don't need a bridge or implant with cost 3 TIMES as much and INS. won't pay because you blew it with losing the tooth by NOT restoring it the first time. Please listen to the professional and don't cut corners. If you had this done in my office in New Jersey it would cost you 1500.00 with Ins. so you are already ahead.
