My mom is in her fifties and has not been to the dentist in years. She is missing a tooth in front (which she puts dental wax in to make it less noticeable) I have been trying to convince her to make an appointment but she won't. We have dental insurance. Every time I try to talk to her about it she brushes it off or gets mad. I know the last time She went the dentist embarrassed her by saying something insensitive. We have gotten a new dentist since then. I really don't know what to do and I just want her to be healthy. Please help!

All you can say is; There are people just like you who go to the dentist, and they're OK. If you just try; for me. I don't want you to get sick and gum disease has been linked to other medical conditions that can affect your organs. If that doesn't work I would try reverse psychology after around 2 or 3 weeks have passed. Say; Mum I'd ask you to get you're teeth fixed but I know you won't ever go, in fact I bet you would'nt even make an appointment! She will think about it for sure.

Abused an humiliated by Dentist. What are my options? I am NOT looking for a lawsuit. Just my dignity.?
A tooth on my existing partial broke off and I had asked my dentist to make me a new one. I stated that I again, wanted a Valplast partial. He took the imprint and sent it out. It came back a week or so ago and I went to the office to pick it up. It wasn't what I had expected. The teeth were small and discolored and it was set on a metal plate. I thought it was me so I had tried to live with it but the discomfort became unbearable. I developed sores on the inside of my mouth and the teeth looked awful. I tried to like them but friends and coworkers looked at me and their look spoke a thousand words- it looked awful. I called the office and went back. The dentist who was once so very kind was furious as I sat in the chair crying trying to explain why I didn't like the partial. I showed him the sores on the inside of my mouth and he stormed out of the room. He caused a big scene and fellow patients came to have a look. He kept saying he wanted to retire. I did nothing. I just said there, I couldn't believe this was happening. I wasn't hysterical when I came in so don't get the wrong impression. I cried in pain. I'm a Psychiatric Tech. and I know how to handle myself-- which I could say the same for others. He told me "Oh great! Now I have to pay for this!" He tried to force it into my mouth. He tried to force me into keeping it as a supposed "spare" but I said no. His dental hygienist was kind. She agreed the partial did not look right and said I had every right to voice my opinion. Another came in and tried to cheer me up. I left. He did the impression and I now I am waiting on my new partial... I am really very fearful of going back. I don't want to be subjected to his abuse. He already charged my dental insurance company and I will be making a payment arrangement to pay off the remainder. Can I request that I pick up the teeth without seeing him? What do I do?

I bet he will apologize to you about his behavior. I have had moments in which I felt like your dentist, but would never act the way he did. I would leave the office and take a walk for a few minutes and recompose myself.

Anyone know the cost difference between a regular root canal procedure and an emergency one?
Unfortunately, I left a cavity in one of my molars untreated and it has now gotten an abscess and I was told by my dentist a root canal is the only thing to save it. I cannot get dental insurance coverage until January of 2010 and he told me that by that time, there is a pretty good chance the tooth would have fallen out on it's own, while also infecting neighboring teeth and/or them falling out as well. He advised me that since I do not have insurance, to go to the school of dentistry in my neighborhood but when I called, they told me that they were booked until August, which of course, is around the time I will be away on a trip so appointments at that time would be impossible for me anyway. They do take emergencies however, and i'm thinking I can pull off passing it as such, even though I am in no pain at all from it but people have told me that the emergency procedure would cost more than just getting one by appointment. If this is going to cost as much or almost as much as my regular dentist would have charged me, i'de rather just somehow come up with the cash and have him do the procedure. I really want to get it done asap by the school by just getting admitting into emergency care for it but I was trying to find out cost variations between emergency procedures and normal ones. Oh and I am in the area of Philadelphia, PA if that helps.

Broken tooth, filling exposed. Should I have it pulled?
About a year ago I had a tooth break and it exposed the filling. It does not hurt so since I have no dental insurance I have been putting off getting it taken care of. I have a continuous taste of metal on the side of my mouth where the tooth is. More metal taste after I eat or chew gum. I have read abit about mercury poisoning from old silver dental amalgams and this has become a concern for me since I already have problems with anxiety and depression. I know its probably just a coincidence but ever since this tooth broke last year my mental and physical health have declined. Probably not related but kinda funny. Anyone really know if this could be releasing toxins into my blood stream? If so I will probably just get it pulled because I don't want anymore of that mercury stuff put in my mouth and I don't really have the money to do anything else about it. Thank you for your answers.

It not only could it be releasing toxins into you but you could die from the poisons from an infected tooth. If there is no tooth pain then it has not yet began to attack your nerves, probably. But if left untreated when it does it could be fatal. Dont wait for the pain to kick in if at all possible. Because if you wait then it will likely be a surgical removle which is far more expensive than a basic extraction experienced if you go in now.

How bad is this situation I have put myself in...?
Few years ago I was told I needed to have my bottom wisdom teeth removed...I hestitated and waited about less than a year ago I went back to the University at Buffalo school of dental and they showed me an x-ray of how my wisdom teeth have progressed. they were now horizontal and closing in on my back teeth... Today, well actually, 2 months ago my left wisdom tooth is almost out of my gums and I can see the tooth. I can only see the side because the front part of it is digging into my back tooth causing immense pain. Taking 100mg of Ibprofen usually subsides it a little. So now i can phyiscally touch this tooth. Do you think if I were to get this extracted it would be easier or harder to do? The reason why I hestitated was because I had no health or dental insurance and still dont right now...not sure the cost of an extraction...how bad is this?

why arent my wisdom teeth doing right?
I'm 19 and like 2 months ago one of my wisdom teeth started coming in..like I can just see it starting to break through. But it never finished coming in and it never hurt this badly before but now its driving me crazy! It hurts and I swear its makin my allergies worse.. does anyone know why it wont come in all the way? oh..I should mention I dont have dental insurance because I just got put on tricare and my husband and I didnt know you had to apply for dental seprate..lol

Now I know they're infected. Worst pain in my life and I've had 3rd degree burns on the soles of my feet. (someone took a blowtorch to my feet. I was bound/tied to a chair. Yes, this is true...) I'm going to the dentist but I'm not sure I can afford it. Researching options now.

Toothache: Is this my tooth or my sinuses?
How do I know the difference, as in how do I know if my toothache is something dental related, such as a cavity, or if it is a sinus infection causing the toothache? BTW it is on my right side, second to last molar on the top. PS. I have no medical or dental insurance and hardly any money, so I need to decide whether I should visit a dentist or a doctor first.

I am sure you don't want to hear this but the only way to know for sure is to see a doctor or dentist. Since the tooth is hurting, I would start at the dentist, a infected tooth can cause sinuse problems and that can lead to very serious problems so you really need to get it checked. Even tho the gums and everything looks normal doesn't really mean anything, the infection could be deep in the tooth. It is more likely that a tooth will cause sinuse problems then sinuse problems causing teeth problems. Good luck.
